No. 8 UCLA Falls to Huskies in Seattle

February 23, 2020 | Women's Basketball

SEATTLE, WASH. – No. 8 UCLA women's basketball (23-4, 12-4) fell to Washington (12-15, 4-12) on Saturday afternoon, splitting the season series with a 74-68 loss in Seattle. The Bruins managed 20 offensive rebounds but struggled to find consistent offensive production, shooting just 22-70 (.314) from the field.

Charisma Osborne was a bright spot for UCLA today, as the freshman followed her 32-point performance against Washington State (Feb. 21) with 23 points and 10 rebounds this afternoon. Michaela Onyenwere had a tough shooting night, but put up 12 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in the loss.

Amber Melgoza led the Huskies with 22 points on her Senior Day. Rita Pleskevich went 6-for-6 from the field and put up 15 points.

The opening frame commenced with cold shooting starts from both teams. Chantel Horvat hit two buckets in the paint before a pair of free throws from Mai-Loni Henson made it 6-4 Huskies at the 6:17 mark. Later in the first, Osborne notched two-straight buckets in the paint, but UW countered with a quick 5-0 run to take a 15-8 lead (1:45). Osborne followed her own miss for the putback two and, later, hustled to deflect a ball out of bounds off of Washington, leading to a pair of free throws from Onyenwere cut UCLA's deficit to 15-11 at the end of the first.

Washington opened the second quarter strong, scoring the first six points (21-12) on a pair of UCLA turnovers. With the Bruins down nine, Japreece Dean scored her first points on a nifty floater in the paint, but T.T. Watkins answered right back with a corner triple (28-18). Kiara Jefferson cut the lead to eight with a long ball from the right elbow extended, and Lindsey Corsaro followed with a pair of free throws to make it a 30-24 game (4:20). Another beautiful feed from Dean led to a tough lay-in for Lauryn Miller, the last bucket scored in the half.

The Huskies took a 30-26 lead into the break behind eight points from Melgoza and six each from Rita Pleskevich and Ali Bamberger. Seven Bruins scored in the opening 20 minutes, but Osborne's six points were the half high for UCLA.

The teams exchanged baskets to open the third quarter and the Bruins down themselves down 32-28 before Onyenwere knocked down a jumper in the paint (7:55). Down four, the Bruins turned the ball over and gave up a 3-pointer at the top of the key to Pleskevich, giving UW the 39-32 advantage at the media stoppage (4:46). Later, Onyenwere stuffed Melgoza with a block and took the ball the length of the floor, finally dumping it off to Horvat for the easy two (43-36). Washington responded with a 7-3 run to end the quarter, taking a 50-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

After a pair of Bamberger free throws made it 56-42 (7:00), a lay-up from Onyenwere capped a quick 6-2 run for the Bruins that cut the UW lead to 11 with 5:08 to play. The teams exchanged 3-pointers before Missy Peterson added her own triple, extending the Huskies' lead back to 12. UCLA would not back down, as Osborne and Dean combined for a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 67-63 with 1:42 remaining, a stretch aided a technical foul assessed to Washington head coach Jodie Wynn. Dean would make it a four-point lead after a driving lay-up, but UCLA couldn't close the gap any further. Washington iced the game away at the line and secured the 74-68 win.

Dean finished with 14 points and six assists on the day for the Bruins. Horvat also notched a double-digit performance with 10 points.
