TEMPE, Ariz. – Redshirt sophomore Cody Riley scored 16 points as the UCLA men's basketball team lost to Arizona State, 84-66, on Thursday evening in Desert Financial Arena.
Redshirt freshman Tyger Campbell registered 13 points and a team-high five assists for the Bruins (12-11, 5-5).
Alonzo Verge Jr. scored a game-high 26 points—including 24 in the second half—off the bench for the Sun Devils (14-8, 5-4). Remy Martin (15 points), Rob Edwards (13) and Kimani Lawrence also scored in double figures for ASU. Romello White led all players with 16 rebounds.
The Sun Devils made 14 of 24 shots from 3-point distance (58.3 percent). Lawrence, Verge Jr. and Khalid Thomas each hit three of three from long range. ASU shot 50 percent overall (29 of 58) and outscored UCLA by a 27-9 margin in fastbreak points.
The Bruins converted five of their first six shot attempts to take a 10-9 lead with 15:51 to go in the first half, but that would prove to be their final lead of the game. The Sun Devils knocked down eight of 10 shots from distance during the first half and twice saw their lead reach 11 points before the break. UCLA went on a 10-0 run to briefly cut its deficit to one, but ASU closed by scoring 11 of the final 12 points to take a 39-28 lead into the locker room.
The Sun Devils' good fortune extended into the second half, with Martin and Verge Jr. leading the way. Freshman Jaime Jaquez Jr. of the Bruins made a 3-pointer to open the stanza, but ASU answered with nine of the next 10 points and saw its lead reach 23 points with 5:10 to go. Riley scored a dozen points in the game's final 20 minutes.
Each team grabbed 36 rebounds. Junior Chris Smith led UCLA with eight boards.
The Bruins will finish out their desert road trip on Saturday, when they visit McKale Center to take on No. 23 Arizona. ESPN2 will televise the Pac-12 contest, scheduled for a 7 p.m., PT start.
