Close Earns 100th Pac-12 Victory as No. 10 UCLA Downs No. 6/5 Stanford

STANFORD, CALIF. – No. 10 UCLA women's basketball traveled to Maples Pavilion and took down No. 6/5 Stanford, 79-69, giving Michael Price Family UCLA Head Women's Basketball Coach Cori Close her 100th-career Pac-12 victory.
The Bruins were led by Michaela Onyenwere, who put up 29 points and 10 rebounds on the night. The junior notched her 10th 20+ point performance and sixth double-double of the year. Chantel Horvat notched a career-high 14 points and added seven rebounds in the victory.
Junior guard Kiana Williams was Stanford's best scorer, recording 25 points on 9-for-22 shooting, including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc. Lacie Hull (12 points) and Ashten Prechtel (10) each scored in double figures for the Cardinal.
The game opened up with some fast-paced action, including six quick points from Onyenwere, with the teams tied 8-8 at the 7:09 mark. After Williams hit a three-pointer for the Cardinal, the Bruins responded with a pair of baskets from junior Lauryn Miller and Chantel Horvat to take the 12-11 lead with 4:55 to play in the opening frame. The Cardinal responded with a quick 7-0 run, but UCLA fired right back and ended the quarter on a 7-3 sprint to take a two-point deficit (21-19) into the second quarter. Five Bruins scored in the opening 10 minutes, including Onyenwere, up put up nine points. Williams was impressive for Stanford, knocking down three three-pointers en route to 11 first-quarter points.
After scoring the last five points of the first quarter, the Bruins came out firing and put up the first five points in the second to take a 24-21 lead (8:08). With the Bruins up four (29-25) with 4:12 left to play in the half, Natalie Chou and Horvat each put in second-chance layups to extend the lead to eight. Chou added another jumper to make it 35-26 (1:07) before the Cardinal added the final four points of the second quarter to give UCLA a 35-30 lead at the break. Onyenwere and Chou finished with 13 and eight points, respectively, after two quarters.
Onyenwere opened the third quarter with her career-high tying third long ball of the night, giving UCLA a 38-30 lead early in the second half. Later, the Bruins found themselves up six before Stanford put up four-straight points, a short run capped by a lay-in from Ashten Prechtel. Another three-ball from Williams would put the Cardinal up one (45-44) at the 3:47 mark, but UCLA responded with back-to-back baskets from Onyenwere and Dean to take back a three-point lead. The Bruins would finish the half strong as Horvat hit a lay-up with one second left on a wonderful feed from Dean. UCLA took a 50-45 lead heading into the fourth.
Onyenwere stayed hot to start the fourth, going on a personal 5-2 run, including a tough and-one lay-in to put the Bruins up 54-47 with 8:58 to play. After the Cardinal cut the deficit to four (57-53), Charisma Osborne and Onyenwere hit back-to-back buckets to give the Bruins a 61-53 lead with 6:11 to play. Williams would cut the Cardinal's deficit to 63-59 with a pair of free throws at the 3:03 mark, but the Bruins responded at the other end with a second-chance bucket from Horvat to extend the lead to six. After a timeout from Coach Close, Onyenwere and Osborne connected on back-to-back baskets for the second time in the final frame, giving UCLA its largest lead of the night (69-59) with 1:25 to play. UCLA would ice the game away at the line and solidify the final score at 79-69.
