February 08, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CHICAGO – The No. 4 UCLA women's tennis team defeated No. 9 Florida State, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Saturday afternoon at XS Tennis Village.
The Bruins will next face No. 1 Stanford in one of Sunday's semifinals. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., PT.
Freshman Sasha Vagramov posted the clinching win for the second match in a row. Sophomore Elysia Bolton and freshman Abbey Forbes also turned in victories for UCLA (6-0). All were of the straight-set variety. The Bruins captured the doubles point without losing a match. Florida State fell to 6-1.
For the second time in as many Indoors matches, second-ranked Bolton and redshirt senior Jada Hart picked up the first win of the day. Facing off against No. 15 Victoria Allen and Petra Hule of the Seminoles, Bolton/Hart earned a break of serve at 3-3 en route to a 6-3 victory. The win marked the pair's fourth against a top-15 opponent in as many tries this season.
Forbes and junior Annette Goulak rebounded from an 0-3 deficit on Court 2 to make it 4-4, but the day's first point would be captured on Court 3. There, junior Abi Altick and junior Taylor Johnson took five of the last six games versus Sasha Hill and Emmanuelle Salas to finalize a 6-2 decision. The win marked the third in a row for Altick/Johnson.
Five first sets went to UCLA in singles play to keep momentum firmly on the side of the Bruins. No. 14 Bolton was the first to finish the job, dispatching of Salas by a 6-3, 6-2 score on the top court. With Saturday's results, Bolton has earned singles and doubles victories in four consecutive matches.
Next off was fifth-ranked Forbes, who rolled to a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Hule on Court 2. The win represented the sixth in a row for the Raleigh, N.C. native and improved her overall record to 18-2. The 18 wins are a team high, as are her six dual-match triumphs.
Vagramov sped through her first set with Andrea Garcia on Court 6, blanking her Florida State counterpart. Garcia pushed back in the second, but Vagramov proved too strong for a clinching 6-0, 6-4 result.
