No. 9 UCLA Routs Utah on Senior Day

LOS ANGELES – No. 9 UCLA women's basketball (25-4, 14-4) notched a 77-54 victory over Utah (13-16, 6-12) Sunday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The win clinched for the Bruins the No. 2 seed and a first-round bye in the upcoming Pac-12 Tournament in Las Vegas (Mar. 5-8). Today's game also marked UCLA's annual Senior Day festivities in which Japreece Dean and Ally Rosenblum were recognized.
 
UCLA dominated on the glass, recording season highs in total rebounds (55) and offensive rebounds (29). All 10 Bruins that played today got on the scoresheet, including Dean, who put up 16 points and went 14-for-14 from the free throw line.
 
Kiana Moore and Julie Brosseau each put up 11 points for the Utes.
 
The Bruins dominated the opening minutes of the game, jumping out to a 7-0 lead behind four offensive rebounds and a corner triple from Charisma Osborne (8:31). After a perimeter foul led to three free throws for the Utes, the Bruins surged to a 9-2 run behind three buckets from Onyenwere and a long ball from Kiara Jefferson (16-4), forcing a timeout from Utah head coach Lynne Roberts. The teams exchanged free throws for the next several minutes before Kiana Moore sliced through the paint for a lay-in for Utah (1:19). Onyenwere fired right back, answering with a triple from the elbow extended to make in a 24-12 game. Utah hit one more from the line, giving UCLA an 11-point lead after one. Onyenwere tallied 11 points and five rebounds in the frame to lead the Bruins in both categories.
 
UCLA continued to execute offensively to open the second quarter, as Natalie Chou drained a triple on the Bruins' opening possession and Lindsey Corsaro followed with a pair of free throws (29-15). The next possession saw UCLA grab four offensive rebounds that led to a pair of free throws from Dean (7:21). Back-to-back baskets from Onyenwere and Dean forced a Utah timeout with UCLA up 35-18. After neither team scored for almost three minutes, Dean found Brown in the paint with for the final bucket of the half, sending UCLA into the locker room with a 39-22 lead. The Bruins totaled 20 offensive rebounds in the first half and outrebounded the Utes 32-20.
 
The Bruins picked up the first points of the second half on a steal-and-score from Osborne, After the teams exchanged free throws, Lola Pendande hit a putback lay-in to make it a 45-27 game at the media stoppage. Neither team could produce basket for the next 2:44, with Niyah Becker and Kayla Owens then exchanging baskets to put the Bruins up 21 (1:55). Chou drained a triple from the left elbow extended as the buzzer sounded, putting UCLA up 58-34 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
UCLA went up 58-37 in the fourth quarter before going on an 8-1 run highlighted by threes from Corsaro and Jefferson. Later, Brown scored under the basket on a beautiful wrap-around feed from Kayla Owens to put UCLA up 68-43 at the media timeout. Dean knocked down her 13th and 14th free throws with 3:01 to play before exiting to a standing ovation from the Pauley crowd. The teams exchanged baskets for the rest of the quarter and UCLA secured the 77-54 victory.
 
UP NEXT
The Bruins are heading to Las Vegas for the 2020 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. UCLA has secured a first-round bye in the tournament and plays its second-round game on Friday, Mar. 6.
