MVB Downs CSUN in Four Sets

The No. 12 UCLA men's volleyball team (9-9) put away CSUN (4-11) in four sets in a non-league match played on Thursday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the contest were 26-24, 25-21, 25-27, 25-22. Daenan Gyimah led the Bruin attack with a season-high tying 14 kills and season-highs for aces (three) and points (19.5). The Bruins will square off against No. 6 UC San Diego (13-3) on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. in the John Wooden Center.
In set one, CSUN snapped a 5-all tie with a 5-1 run for a 6-10 advantage over the Bruins. With the Matadors up 7-12, UCLA went on an 8-3 run keyed by Gyimah's two kills, two aces and a block to level the score at 15-all. After CSUN rallied to take a 17-20 lead, the Bruins put three straight points together to even the score at 20 on an ace from Matt Younggren. J.R. Norris' swing tied the score at 23-all and was followed by another ace from Gyimah. CSUN tied the score at 24-each, but Norris delivered another kill and Mads Kyed Jensen followed with the set-winner for a 26-24 decision.
UCLA moved out to an 8-4 lead in set two after a block by Alex Knight / Younggren. The margin grew to 14-8 on a Kyed Jensen ace. After the Bruins had taken a 19-11 advantage, the Matadors stormed back to close to 22-19. Kills by Gyimah and then Norris combined with a CSUN service error left UCLA with a 25-21 win.
After CSUN grabbed an early lead in set three, the teams traded points with ties at 5 through 9. With the Matadors in front 9-11, kills from Austin Matautia and Gyimah evened the score at 11 apiece. A block by Daniel Matheney / Sam Kobrine / Knight ignited a five-point rally by the Bruins which snapped a 15-all tie. CSUN closed to 23-21 after a Bruin error. A Norris kill handed UCLA a match point opportunity at 24-21. CSUN's block came alive and keyed three-straight points for the Matadors which tied the score at 24. Each team saved multiple set points down the stretch, but CSUN came away the win at 25-27.
In set four, Sam Burgi's kill broke a 6-all tie. CSUN came back to level the set at 12-all. The Bruins then rattled off four straight on kills by Sam Kobrine, Matheney and Burgi to go with a Matador error. A Kyed Jensen swing pushed UCLA's cushion to 21-16. CSUN fought back to 24-22, but Sam Kobrine hit off hands ended the match at 25-22.
Matautia joined Gyimah in double-figure kills with 10. Matheney had another strong effort off the bench and finished with four kills and three blocks. Sam Kobrine finished with six kills and a career-best four blocks. Norris totaled a career-high four kills. UCLA out hit the Matadors .243 to .200 for the match. The Bruins enjoyed an 8-2 edge at the service line and a 11.5 to 11.0 margin in total blocks.
