
MVB Aces No. 6 UCSD in Four Sets

The No. 12 UCLA men's volleyball team (10-9) defeated No. 6 UC San Diego (13-5) in a four-setter held on Saturday evening in the John Wooden Center. Scores of the non-league match were 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21. Senior middle blocker Daenan Gyimah led the Bruins with a season-high 16 kills while hitting .625. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Daniel Matheney added a career-best seven kills, hitting .800, to go with four blocks. UCLA, which hit over .400 in a match for the third time this season, will return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) action next Friday at No. 9 Pepperdine.
UCLA started quickly in set one, moving to a 9-5 edge after a kill from Austin Matautia. A couple of kills in a row by Gyimah and a UCSD error upped the advantage to 14-7. A block by Alex Knight / Matt Younggren increased the gap to 17-9 as the Bruins cruised to a 25-16 verdict. UCLA hit .692 for the frame.
The Bruins grabbed an 8-6 lead in set two. UCSD drew even at 9-all. The Bruins led 13-11 following a swing from Gyimah. The Tritons answered with the next four points to move in front 13-15. UCLA tied the score at 18-all on an ace by Mads Kyed Jensen. After a Gyimah kill leveled the score at 20-all, UCSD ran off three in a row for a 20-23 lead and went on to close out the Bruins 23-25. Younggren registered seven kills in the set for the Bruins.
In set three, the score went back and forth until the teams reached 12-all. A kill from Gyimah and another ace by Kyed Jensen pushed UCLA in front 14-12. A block by Daniel Matheney / Kyed Jensen upped the lead to 18-15. After the Tritons closed to 21-19, UCLA ran off four straight on a Gyimah kill, Kyed Jensen ace and back-to-back blocks by J.R. Norris IV / Gyimah to produce a 25-19 win.
Kills by Matheney and Matautia broke a 5-all tie in set four. A kill by Kyed Jensen made it 10-7. Sam Kobrine's kill sent the Bruins up 15-12. A pair of kills from Knight increased the gap to 17-13. UCSD came back to get within one, at 20-19, before Matheney answered with a kill and then teamed up with Kobrine on a block for a 22-20 lead. An ace by Matheney, off the tape, ended the set and the match at 25-21.
UCLA outhit the Tritons .427 to .202 for the match and won the battle of the block 12.5 to 3.0. The Bruins owned a seven to three edge from the service line, topped by Kyed Jensen's three aces. Younggren tied his season-best with nine kills and hit. 615 as the Bruin middles combined to register 32 kills on the night. Knight added a couple of block solos to go with three block assists.
