UCLA Vaults to Victory over Cal, 197.900-196.725

March 08, 2020 | Gymnastics

LOS ANGELES – No. 3 UCLA used a season-high 49.575 on vault and a perfect 10 on vault by Kyla Ross to defeat No. 9 California, 197.900-196.725 in the teams' final Pac-12 Conference meet.

UCLA started the meet with a bang, with a pair of stuck vaults by Nia Dennis (9.85) and Gracie Kramer (career-high 9.95), and closed with dynamite, as Ross nailed a no-doubt-about-it perfect 10, her first of the season on the event. The 10 was Ross's third overall this season and 22nd of her career. Kendal Poston also posted a career-best mark, tying her high with a 9.9. The Bruins also added scores of 9.875 from Felicia Hano and 9.8 from Sekai Wright to take a 0.275 lead over Cal, who scored 49.3 on bars.

The Bruins extended their lead in the second rotation to 0.725 after recording a 49.45 on bars. Ross again led the team, with her 10th 9.975 score of the season. Margzetta Frazier made her return to the lineup after missing the last three meets while resting an injured ankle and scored 9.9. Madison Kocian, who was a late add to the lineup, contributed a 9.875, and Norah Flatley and Hano each added 9.85s.

UCLA maintained the lead on beam with five counting sores of 9.825 or higher. Flatley had the best score of the set, earning a 9.9 for the second-straight meet. Grace Glenn's leadoff 9.875 and Ross's 9.85 bookended the rotation, which also saw 9.825s from Samantha Sakti and Nicki Shapiro. Cal, meanwhile, scored 49.225 on floor, putting them behind the Bruins, 148.300-147.525.

A 49.600 on floor in the final rotation put the Bruins just on the edge of a 198 score, as they finished with a 197.900. Dennis and Hano led the way with meet-winning scores of 9.950, with Dennis earning a perfect 10 from one of the two judges. UCLA had three other 9.9 scores from Flatley, Kramer and Ross to wrap up the victory.

Ross won the all-around again, her eighth win in as many all-around attempts, posting a score of 39.725. Hano battled through illness to tie for second place with Cal's Maya Bordas with a score of 39.450.

"Today was another huge step for UCLA Gymnastics," said UCLA head coach Chris Waller. "We put together a great vault set, and confidence there is building up. We've been good on vault in practice, and it's been like one baby step just trying to bring it into the competition, and here we finally brought it into the competition, and we still have room for growth."

The Bruins (10-3, 5-2) will close the regular season on Saturday, Mar. 14 vs. Bridgeport on Senior Day. UCLA will honor its nine seniors – Anna Glenn, Grace Glenn, Hano, Kocian, Kramer, Ross, Mercedez Sanchez, Shapiro, and Macy Toronjo – in post-meet festivities.
