Powell Headlines Bruins in D1Baseball Positional Rankings
May 01, 2020 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES -- Junior closer Holden Powell earned the top spot among relief pitchers to lead a contingent of seven UCLA baseball players to make the cut in D1Baseball's positional power rankings.ย
The Bruins had a trio of players (Powell, Matt McLain, Garrett Mitchell) place inside the top-10 of their respective position and six of seven made the top-25. D1Baseball ranked the top 30 players at each infield position, 100 outfielders, 100 starting pitchers, and 50 relief pitchers.ย
Powell was lights out at the back of the Bruin bullpen in 2020, allowing no runs and striking out 20 in just 9 1/3 innings of action. A year after winning the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award as college baseball's top relief pitcher, he was a favorite to take home the trophy again in 2020.ย
McLainย had a breakout sophomore season in 2020, slashing .397/.422/.621 and flashing a solid glove up the middle. Mitchell batted .355 atop the UCLA lineup and struck out just three times on the season, making him the 12th-toughest batter to strike out in the NCAA this season.ย
UCLA's honorees were rounded out by Zach Pettway (No. 11, SP), Kyle Mora (No. 21, RP), Noah Cardenas (No. 24, C), and Jesse Bergin (No. 82, SP).ย
