BASEBALL
  • Trevor Bauer, RHP, Cincinnati Reds โ€“ Bauer is off to a spectacular start to his first full season with the Reds, as he's crafted a 3-0 record with a 0.68 ERA over four starts. The former Golden Spikes Award winner has struck out 41 batters over his 26 1/3 innings of work. He would lead the National League in ERA and WHIP (0.57) if he met the qualifying minimum. In his last start, against the Royals on Aug. 19, he struck out nine and allowed just one hit over seven innings. His 41 strikeouts over his first four starts are the fourth-most in NL history and the most since Randy Johnson had 42 in 2000. ย ย ย 
  • Griffin Canning, RHP, Los Angeles Angels โ€“ Canning is in his first full season in the Angels rotation. So far on the year, he has an 0-3 record with a 4.88 ERA in 27 2/3 innings. In his most recent start, he received a no decision after allowing three earned runs and striking out three in 4 2/3 innings at Oakland (Aug. 22).
  • Gerrit Cole, RHP, New York Yankees โ€“ One of the top pitchers in baseball over the last few years, Cole has kept it rolling in his first season in pinstripes, posting a 4-0 record with a 2.75 Era and 44 strikeouts in 36 innings. On Aug. 19, he notched 10 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of two-run ball against the Tampa Bay Rays. He ranks among the American League leaders in strikeouts (third), wins (third), WAR (1.3, fourth), innings (fifth), WHIP (0.89, sixth), and ERA (ninth),
  • Brandon Crawford, SS, San Francisco Giants โ€“ Crawford is slashing .261/.414/.522 over his last seven games with one home run, four RBIs, and five walks. Thanks in part to his hot bat, San Francisco has won six consecutive games and is in a wild card position as of Monday.
  • Matt Grace, LHP, Arizona Diamondbacks โ€“ Grace was called up by Arizona last week, making his Arizona and 2020 debut on Aug. 20 with a scoreless inning of relief at Oakland. He's made two relief appearances so far this year.
  • Tyler Heineman, C, San Francisco Giants โ€“ Heineman is batting .195 in 13 games with the Giants this year. He made his MLB pitching debut on Aug. 16, throwing a scoreless inning of relief against the A's. ย 
  • James Kaprielian, RHP, Oakland Athletics โ€“ Kaprielian made his Major League debut on Aug. 16, pitching two innings against the Giants. The first batter he faced, fellow Bruin alum Brandon Crawford, hit a home run to left-center. ย 
  • Adam Plutko, RHP, Cleveland Indians โ€“ Plutko is in his fourth MLB season, all with Cleveland. He is 1-2 on the year with a 6.88 ERA over five appearances (four starts). ย 
  • Pat Valaika,ย  INF, Baltimore Orioles โ€“ Valaika is slashing .231/.286/.462 in his first season in Baltimore. He batted .316 (6-19) over the last week and hit a home run in three straight games from Aug. 20-22. ย 
  • Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has his club out to a 22-8 start through 30 games. The Dodgers are the only club in MLB to have hit the 20-win plateau so far.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
  • Norman Powell, G, Toronto Raptors โ€“ Helped lead the Toronto Raptors to a first-round sweep of the Brooklyn Nets, scoring a team-leading 29 points on Sunday in the series-clinching win. He averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in the four-game series, shooting 60.5 percent from the field and knocking down 10 of 22 attempts from 3-point territory. Now in his fifth season in the NBA, Powell averaged a career-best 16.0 points per game for Toronto during the 2019-20 regular season. Toronto will face the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals, beginning Thursday, Aug. 27.
  • Aaron Holiday, G, Indiana Pacers โ€“ averaged 10.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in the Indiana Pacers' first three playoff games. Holiday scored 12 points and registered five assists in Game 2 last Thursday. Indiana trails the Miami Heat, three games to none, in a best-of-seven first-round playoff series.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
  • Monique Billings, F, Atlanta Dream โ€“ Billings ('18) is having a breakout season for the Atlanta Dream, averaging career-highs in minutes (28.0), points (9.0), and rebounds (8.6). She opened the season with a career-high 30 points in the Dream's victory against Dallas. Billings recorded her third double-double of the season in the Dream's win over Minnesota on Aug. 23, putting up 16 points and 13 rebounds. ย 
  • Kennedy Burke, G, Indiana Fever - Burke ('19) got the start for the Indiana Fever on Friday, Aug. 21, scoring a career-high 23 points in the Fever's victory over current No. 1 seed Seattle.
  • Jordin Canada, G, Seattle Storm โ€“ Canada ('18) is averaging a career-high 5.4 assists for the Seattle Storm, the third-highest average in the league. Canada has notched a pair of double-digit assist performances and five double-digit scoring games for the 11-3 Storm.
  • Seattle Assistant Coach Noelle Quinn ('07) has helped guide the Storm to a league-best 11-3 record.
MEN'S SOCCER
  • Frankie Amaya, MF, FC Cincinnati โ€“ Amaya started and played the full 90 on Aug. 21 in a matchup with DC United. The former No. 1 overall MLS draft pick scored his first professional goal earlier this summer, a highlight-reel strike on Jul. 16 against Atlanta.
  • Reggie Cannon, D, FC Dallas โ€“ Cannon started and played the full 90 in Dallas's matchup with Houston. The game ended in a scoreless draw.
  • Abu Danladi, F, Nashville SC โ€“ Danladi subbed in and played the final 10 minutes of Nashville's loss to Atlanta on Aug. 22.
  • Andy Rose, MF, Vancover Whitecaps โ€“ Rose started and played the full 90 in Vancouver's 1-0 loss to Toronto on Aug. 21.
  • Kelyn Rowe, MF, New England Revolution โ€“ Started and played 86 minutes in a scoreless draw against Philadelphia on Aug. 20. He recorded one shot.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
  • Teagan Micah, GK, Arna-Bjørnar & Siri Ervik, GK, Kolbotn โ€“ In an Aug. 22 matchup between two Bruin goalkeepers in Norway's Toppserien, Micah's Arna-Bjørnar defeated Ervik's Kolbotn by a score of 3-2. Micah made two saves in the game, while Ervik had five.
MEN'S GOLF
  • Patrick Cantlay โ€“ Patrick Cantlay has advanced to the second stage of the PGA TOUR FedExCup Playoffs. He is ranked 37th entering the BMW Championship, taking place in the greater Chicago area this week (Aug. 27-30), with the Top 30 following this week's play advancing to next week's TOUR Championship in Atlanta.
  • The PGA TOUR Champions is playing in Ridgedale, Mo. this week at the Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National (Aug. 24-26). Brandt Jobe, Scott McCarron, Steve Pate, Corey Pavin, Tom Pernice, Jr., Ken Tanigawa and Duffy Waldorf are in the field.
  • Jake Knapp โ€“ Tied for 37th at last week's Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship. He'll be playing in this week's Korn Ferry Tour Championship (Aug. 27-30) in Indiana.
WOMEN'S GOLF
  • Five Bruins (Tiffany Joh, Bronte Law, Alison Lee, Louise Ridderstrom and Patty Tavatanakit) played in the AIG Women's British Open last week. Lee (T-29) and Law (T-51) both made the cut. The LPGA Tour heads back to the U.S. at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship (Aug. 28-30). Joh, Law, Lee, Ridderstrom, Tavatanakit, Brianna Do, Lee Lopez and Ryann O'Toole are all in the field. Do tied for 18th, the best showing for a Bruin, at last week's IOA Championship on the Symetra Tour.
MEN'S TENNIS
  • Marcos Giron (2012-14) & Mackenzie McDonald (2014-16) โ€“ The former teammates advanced through qualifying to meet each other in the first round of Western & Southern Open play at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. McDonald was forced to take a medical timeout during the first set, but still pushed his fellow NCAA singles champion to the limit. Giron ultimately prevailed, 7-6(2), 7-5, and will likely find himself ranked in the ATP top 100 for the first time in his career. His run came to an end Monday, with a 6-4, 6-4 loss to defending champion and third-seeded Daniil Medvedev.
  • Jean-Julien Rojer (2000-02) โ€“ Rojer and partner Horia Tecau are still in action at the Western & Southern Open after defeating Jeremy Chardy/Fabrice Martin, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(8), in the tournament's first round. The 2015 Wimbledon and 2017 US Open champions next face Raven Klaasen/Oliver Marach Monday.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
  • Jennifer Brady (2014, 2015) โ€“ One week removed from winning the first WTA championship of her career at the Top Seed Open in Lexington, Ky., Brady was defeated by Jessica Pegula, 7-6(5), 6-4, in the Western & Southern Open first round. In doubles action, Brady and partner Courtney Dolehide defeated Madison Keyes/Sloane Stephens, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0(6), before falling to eighth-seeded Lucie Hradecká/ Andreja Klepac, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round.
  • Ena Shibahara (2017, 2018) โ€“ Shibahara and partner Shuko Aoyama defeated Nao Hibino/Makoto Ninomiya, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(4), in a matchup of Japanese pairs at the Western & Southern Open. A second-round date with Marie Bouzkova/Jil Teichmann or Pegula/Shelby Rogers awaits Aoyama/Shibahara.
