- Trevor Bauer, RHP, Cincinnati Reds โ Over the last week, Bauer made a pair of starts for the Reds, striking out 13 batters and allowing seven earned over 11 2/3 innings. His eight-strikeout performance at Milwaukee on Aug. 24 gave him 49 Ks, a Reds franchise record for the first five starts of a season. Overall, he's 3-2 on the year with a 2.13 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. ย ย ย ย ย
- Griffin Canning, RHP, Los Angeles Angelsย โ Canning had arguably the best outing of his career on Aug. 30 against Seattle, striking out seven and allowing just four hits over eight innings of one-run ball. Just one run of run support meant that Canning was denied his first win of 2020 as the Angels dropped a 2-1 decision in extra innings. He has a 4.04 ERA through seven starts this year, his first full season in the Angels rotation.
- Gerrit Cole, RHP, New York Yankees โ In his lone start of the week, Cole struck out nine in just five innings at Atlanta. The outing โ which snapped a 20-decision winning streak for Cole โ brough his AL East-leading strikeout total to 53 for the season. He still ranks in the top-10 league-wide in wins (4, fourth), WHIP (0.95, sixth), K/9 (11.6, third), innings (41, eighth), and complete games (1, T-first).
- Brandon Crawford, SS, San Francisco Giants โ Crawford continued to swing a hot bat for the Giants last week, hitting .400 (8-20) with a home run and a double. He is up to a .267/.345/.406 slash line for the season.
- Adam Plutko, RHP, Cleveland Indians โ Pitched the final four innings of Cleveland's win over St. Louis on Aug. 28 to earn his second career save (first of 2020). ย ย
- Pat Valaika,ย INF, Baltimore Orioles โ Was a combined 3-8 in his final two starts of the week.
- Dave Roberts, manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has his club out to a 26-10 start through 36 games. The Dodgers have the best winning percentage in the league at .722.
- Norman Powell, G, Toronto Raptors โ Powell and the Toronto Raptors advanced to the Eastern Conference Semifinals after a first-round sweep of the Brooklyn Nets. Toronto dropped Game 1 to the Boston Celtics on Sunday afternoon, 112-94. Powell scored 10 points off the bench in the Game 1 contest.
- Russell Westbrook, G, Houston Rockets โ Westbrook returned to action in a first-round playoff matchup for Houston on Saturday after having missed the first round contests in the best-of-seven series (strained right quadriceps). In Game 5 on Saturday, Westbrook finished with seven points, seven assists and six rebounds through 23 minutes.
- Jordin Canada, G, Seattle Storm โ Canada ('18) is averaging a career-high 5.6 assists for the Seattle Storm, the second-highest average in the league. Canada started nine games for Seattle this season, as the Storm have compiled a league-best 13-3 record and clinched their playoff spot.
- Seattle Associate Head Coachย Noelle Quinnย ('07) has helped guide the Storm to a league-best 13-3 record and a playoff berth. Quinn was elevated to Associate Head Coach for the duration of this shortened season.
- Kari Korver ('17) serves as the Director of Operations for the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sparks have gone 12-3 in the "Wubble" and have clinched a playoff berth.
- Monique Billings, F, Atlanta Dream โย ย Billings ('18) is averaging career highs in points (9.3) and rebounds (8.9) per game for the Dream this season. Billing's 8.9 rebounds per contest are the fourth-highest average in the league. She has notched five double-digit rebound performances this season.
- Kennedy Burke, G/F, Indiana Feverย โ Burke ('18) is averaging career highs in points (7.5), rebounds (2.1), and assists (1.0) this season. Burke has earned four starts for the Fever in 2020 and has notched three games with at least 14 points. The Fever are just a half game back of a playoff berth.ย ย
- Frankie Amaya, MF, FC Cincinnati โ Started and played the full 90 in both of Cincinnati's games this week. Recorded one shot.
- Abu Danladi, F, Nashville SC โ Started both of his club's games this week, helping them to a 1-1-0 record. They were the first starts for Danladi in a Nashville uniform after making the move from Minnesota United in last year's expansion draft. Danladi recorded four shots on Aug. 26, his highest total since the 2017 season.
- Ryan Hollingshead, D, Dallas FC โ Started and played the full 90 in Dallas' 3-1 win over Minnesota on Aug. 29.
- Andy Rose, MF, Vancover Whitecaps โ Rose started and played the full 90 in Vancouver's game against Montreal on Aug. 25.
- Kelyn Rowe, MF, New England Revolution โ Appeared in both of New England's games last week, starting against DC United on Aug. 25 and subbing on against the New York Red Bulls on Aug. 29.
- Jackson Yueill, MF, San Jose Earthquakes โ Started and played the full 90 in a 3-2 loss to the Galaxy on Aug. 29. Yueill wore the captain's armband for the Earthquakes.
- Jessie Fleming, MF, Chelsea FC, & Sam Mewis, MF, Manchester City - The two World Cup veterans made their club debuts in the Community Shield on Aug. 29. Chelsea FC, the FA Women's Super League champions, defeated Manchester City, the 2019 FA Cup champions, 2-0. Fleming played in the final minute of her squad's victory, while Mewis entered the game in the 68th minute.
- Lauren Barnes, D, & Hailie Mace, F, Kristianstads DFF - On loan from NWSL, Barnes and Mace started in their debut with Kristianstads in Sweden on Aug. 29, leading their squad to a 1-0 win over Göteborg. Mace assisted on the winning goal, and Barnes played the full 90.
- Teagan Micah, GK, Arna-Bjørnar - Micah and her squad went 0-1-1 in Toppserien play this week. She made nine saves in a 1-1 tie against Rosenborg on Aug. 30 and had two saves in a 1-0 loss to Sandviken on Aug. 26.
- Siri Ervik, GK, Kolbotn โ Ervik started both games for Kolbotn this week, recording three saves and a shutout in a 0-0 tie with Vålerenga on Aug. 30 and tallying six saves in a 3-1 loss to LSK Kvinner on Aug. 26.
- The NWSL returns on Saturday, Sept. 5 with an 18-match Fall Series. The series runs over seven weeks and features a trio of three-team pods that will all play one another in order to minimize travel. The pods are West (OL Reign, Portland Thorns FC, Utah Royals FC), Northeast (Chicago Red Stars, Sky Blue FC, Washington Spirit) and South (North Carolina Courage, Orlando Pride, Houston Dash). The schedule and team rosters have not yet been announced.
- Patrick Cantlayย โ Patrick Cantlay finished tied for 12th at the BMW Championship, played outside the Chicago area last weekend. He finished 34th in the 2019-2020 FedEx Cup season-long standings, just missing out on this week's TOUR Championship (Top 30 players).
- Jake Knapp, who missed the cut at last week's Korn Ferry Tour Championship, is in the field at this week's Lincoln Land Championship in Springfield, Ill. Fellow Bruin alum Lorens Chan is also in the field.
- Pedro Figueiredo is in the field at this week's Andalucia Masters in Spain.
- Patty Tavatanakit was the top Bruin finisher at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, finishing tied for 21st at 10-under. Fellow Bruin alum Bronte Law also made the cut (T-71, -3).
- Bruin alums Erynne Lee, Lilia Vu and Beth Wu are in the field for this week's Four Winds Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
- Paige Halstead took part in the inaugural weekend of Athletes Unlimited, and was a part of Team Fagan. The league continues on Monday, with week two of five taking place next weekend.
- Jean-Julien Rojer (2000-02) โ Rojer and his longtime partner, Horia Tecau, defeated seventh-seeded Raven Klaasen and Oliver Marach, 6-3, 6-4, in a doubles second-round match Monday, Aug. 24 at the Western & Southern Open in Flushing, N.Y. That proved the end of the line for Rojer/Tecau, however, as the pair dropped a straight-set decision to Steve Johnson/Austin Krajicek in the next day's quarterfinals. Rojer and Tecau will play at least one more match at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center this week, as the US Open begins Monday, with doubles play commencing Wednesday. Rojer/Tecau won the Grand Slam title in 2017.
- Joining Rojer at the US Open are Maxime Cressy (2016-19), Marcos Giron (2012-14) and Mackenzie McDonald (2014-16). Cressy makes his debut in a Grand Slam singles main draw, where he is joined by fellow NCAA champions Giron and McDonald. McDonald has a full plate, as he is also in the doubles field. For good measure, Nick Meister (2008-10, 2012) is coaching Giron in the Big Apple, while Karue Sell (2013-16) is working with women's singles No. 4 seed Naomi Osaka.
- Ena Shibahara (2017, 2018) โ The fifth-seeded pair of Shibahara and Shuko Aoyama bowed out of the Western & Southern Open with a straight-set loss to Jessica Pegula and Shelby Rogers in the doubles second round Tuesday, Aug. 25. Shibahara and Aoyama will have a chance to put the loss behind them this week at the US Open, where they open Wednesday as the tournament's No. 6 seed.
- Jennifer Brady (2014, 2015) once again joins Shibahara at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Brady is also part of the doubles field, while serving as the No. 28 seed in the singles draw. Singles play begins Monday.
