UCLA Returns to Stanford Intercollegiate
October 13, 2021 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 17 UCLA women's golf team will be on the hunt for its third Top 3 team finish this season when it competes at the Stanford Intercollegiate, a staple of the Bruins' fall schedule, this weekend. The three-day, 54-hole stroke play event will begin on Friday, Oct. 15, and end Sunday, Oct. 17.
The Stanford Golf Course is a Par 71 and 6,269 total yards. Live scoring updates will be available at this link.
The Bruins' starting fivesome includes freshmen Alessia Nobilio and Zoe Antoinette Campos, redshirt sophomore Ty Akabane, junior Emma Spitz and senior Simar Singh. Joining UCLA in the 17-team field are six Top 25 teams as well as nine Pac-12 programs: No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 Oregon, No. 9 Texas, No. 20 Georgia, No. 22 San Jose State, No. 23 Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon State, USC, Washington, Washington State, UC Davis, Iowa State, Northwestern and Pepperdine.
UCLA has competed at the Stanford Golf Course in 18 of the last 19 years (cancelled last season), and has left with five team championships. Most recently, the Bruins won back-to-back Stanford Intercollegiate championships in 2016 and 2017.
UCLA has also achieved five individual tournament titles in Stanford. Mariel Galdiano was the last Bruin to earn an individual title at the Stanford Intercollegiate in 2018. Patty Tavatanakit finished first at the event a year prior in 2017. Two Bruins strung together a three-year run from 2013-2015 of UCLA excellence at the Stanford Intercollegiate with Alison Lee (2013) and Bronte Law (2x, 2014 and 2015) hoisting individual tournament titles.
The Bruins last competed at the Stanford Golf Course at the Pac-12 Championships in April of this year, finishing tied for fifth (+23, 875). Juniors Annabel Wilson and Emma Spitz both placed in the Top 10 of the tournament.
Nobilio is coming off back-to-back Top 5 finishes to start her collegiate career. Nobilio placed second at the Blessings Collegiate (E, 216), four strokes behind first place, out of a field of 50 golfers. She opened the tournament in first place at 3-under 69 after round one. Nobilio also led the Bruins in fifth place at The Molly Intercollegiate (3-over 219).
Akabane is coming off her best finish in a tournament, fourth place at the Blessings (1-over 217), since the 2019 Nanea Pac-12 Preview. Akabane birdied three times and recorded UCLA's first eagle of the year in her final round in Fayetteville, Ark.
Spitz placed just outside the Top 10 at the Blessings at 3-over 219.
