STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Alessia Nobilio, coming off two top five individual finishes, shot the lowest round of her career with a 3-under 68 in the opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate on Friday. Collectively, 17th-ranked UCLA women's golf team is in 7th place at 6-over 290.
Stanford, the course host, leads the field by seven strokes at 11-under 273.
Nobilio is tied for second place on the individual leaderboard, three strokes behind Stanford's Rose Zhang.
After bogeying her first hole of the round on the par-4 10th, Nobilio did not have a single misstep, holing four birdies and going bogey-free on the remaining 17 holes. Nobilio birdied on the par-5 16th, par-4 2nd, par-4 6th and par-3 8th to shoot her second sub-70 round of the season.
Redshirt sophomore Ty Akabane is tied for 35th after a 1-over 72 on day one. Akabane eagled in back-to-back rounds, dating back to the Bruins' third round of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 6, after she finished the par-5 7th in just three strokes. Akabane recorded one other star on day one on the par-4 11th.
Junior Emma Spitz sits tied for 51st following a 4-over 75 performance. Spitz was over par on three holes and did not birdie in her first 18 holes of the tournament. Joining Spitz in 51st is freshman Zoe Antoinette Campos, who birdied three times on the par-5 1st, par-3 4th and par-4 9th.
Senior Simar Singh shot a 6-over 77 to finish the day tied for 66th. Singh birdied once on the par-5 1st.
UCLA tees off for round two tomorrow on hole one at 12:05 p.m. PT.
