BASEBALL
- Trevor Bauerย officially signed a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, Feb. 11. The three-year pact reportedly pays him $102 million over the course of the deal and would make him the highest-paid player in Major League Baseball in both 2021 and 2022. Bauer is the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner after leading the league in ERA (1.73) and WHIP (0.79) as a member of the Cincinnati Reds in 2020. He is the first Bruin ever to take home a Cy Young, and the third player ever to win both a Cy Young and college baseball's Golden Spikes Award.
- Kyle Anderson, F, Memphis Grizzlies โ Anderson averaged 16.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in four games with Memphis last week. He scored 27 points on Wednesday (Feb. 10), making 10 of 14 shots and a career-best six 3-pointers (on eight attempts). Anderson had 17 points and six rebounds on Sunday (Feb. 14), draining all three 3-point attempts in a win against Sacramento.
- Lonzo Ball, G, New Orleans Pelicans โ Ball has scored in double figures in all eight games played this month. Over the past week, he averaged 15.3 points and 5.0 assists in four contests with New Orleans. He scored 21 points last Wednesday (Feb. 10) in a loss to the Chicago Bulls, making 6 of 13 shots and 4 of 10 attempts from 3-point territory. Ball has averaged 13.7 points, 4.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds in 23 games this season.
- Aaron Holiday, G, Indiana Pacers โ Holiday scored a season-best 18 points on Saturday in the Pacers' 12-point win against Atlanta. He made 7 of 11 shots and was 1-for-2 from 3-point territory. In four games over the past week, Holiday averaged 9.3 points per contest. This season, he has averaged 7.3 points, 1.9 assists and 1.3 rebounds in 27 games.
- Zach LaVine, G, Chicago Bulls โ LaVine scored in double figures in four games over the past week, totaling at least 30 points in three contests. He scored a season-high 46 points in a 13-point win over New Orleans last Wednesday (Feb. 10), making 9 of 14 attempts from 3-point distance. LaVine also had 35 points on Monday, Feb. 8, and tallied 30 points on Monday, Feb. 15. He has averaged 28.1 points (the No. 6 average in the NBA), 5.4 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game this season (25 contests).
- Norman Powell, G, Toronto Raptors โ Powell has scored in double figures in each of his last 11 games. He has tallied at least nine of those 11 contests. Within the past week, he averaged 23.5 points in four games. He scored 22 points and made 2 of 3 shots from 3-point range in 36 minutes on Sunday (Feb. 14). Powell has averaged 16.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game this season (25 contests). He has shot a career-best 43.0 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
- Russell Westbrook, G, Washington Wizards โ Westbrook averaged 18.8 points in four games for Washington last week. He had a triple-double on Monday evening (Feb. 15), logging 16 points, 15 assists and 13 rebounds as the Wizards defeated the Houston Rockets, 131-119. Westbrook has averaged 19.5 points, 9.1 assists and 9.0 rebounds per game this season (17 contests).
- PGA TOUR โย Patrick Cantlayย (-15) tied for third at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last week, finishing just three shots back of the winner. With his finish, Cantlay moved to the top spot in the season-long FedExCup standings. Cantlay is in the field at this week's Genesis Invitational, which will be played at nearby Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
- Golden State Golf Tour - Recent graduate Hidetoshi Yoshihara won his first professional event at the Temecula Shootout last week, winning in a playoff.
- Reggie Cannon, D, Boavista FC โ Cannon started at right back and played the full 90 in Boavista's 2-2 Primeira Liga draw with Porto on Feb. 13.
- Abby Dahlkemper, D, Manchester City (England) โ Dahlkemper played the full 90 in a 3-0 shutout victory over Manchester United on Feb. 12.
- Jessie Fleming, MF, Chelsea FC (England) โ Fleming played the final eight minutes of Chelsea FC's 5-0 victory over Bristol City on Feb. 14 as the Blues extended their WSL lead to five points over second-place Manchester City.ย
- Rachel Lowe, MF, Sydney FC (Australia) โ Lowe played 32 minutes in Sydney FC's 4-1 upset loss at the hands of Brisbane Roar on Feb. 13, Sydney's first defeat of the season.
- Maria Polyakova ('19) completed a gold medal sweep of her events last week in her home country of Russia. The Russian Cup was held Feb. 10-13 in Penza, Russia (Polyakova's birth city). This marks the first time Polyakova has successfully completed this trifecta, and it was in impressive fashion. On the first day of competition, she scored 70.5 points on her second dive (305B) to move into third place, where she sat until the last round. Much like Bruin counterpart Claire Grover's last-second heroics against USC over the weekend, Polyakova surged ahead on her final dive to win the 3M title. On day two, Polyakova successfully bested the 1M field, scoring 273.65 to easily take the crown. On the final day, Polyakova paired with her World Championship partner to handle the field in synchro, largely on a 75.33-point fourth round 107B. The duo received scores of 7.5 for execution and 9 for synchronization en route to capturing Polyakova's third championship of the weekend (298.33 points).
- Polyakova has now qualified for the Russian World Cup Team, which is scheduled to compete in April 2021. This is the final Olympic Qualifier for diving, in which countries can earn spots for the 2020 Tokyo Games, currently scheduled to be held this summer.
- Maxime Cressy, Marcos Giron and Mackenzie McDonald were in action at the Australian Open. All were part of the singles main draw and Cressy and McDonald matched career-best Grand Slam showings with trips to the second and fourth rounds, respectively. - Dennis Novikov is active at the ASC BMW $25,000 World Tennis Tour in Naples, Fla., where he dropped his singles qualifying match against Kiranpal Pannu of New Zealand, 7-6, 6-1, but will get a chance to advance in the doubles main draw Tuesday. Novikov and partner Strong Kirchmeier meet Corentin Denolly and Clement Tabur in the first round.
- Jennifer Brady willย have a chance to match her career-best Grand Slam singles showing when she faces off with fellow American Jessica Pegula in the Australian Open quarterfinal round Tuesday at approximately 6 p.m., PT. Ena Shibahara and partner Shuko Aoyama reached the doubles quarterfinals, while Brady also logged a doubles win with Ashleigh Barty. For more, visit UCLA at the Australian Open.
- Former UCLA teammates Robin Anderson and Catherine Harrison will reunite as doubles partners at the $25,000 ITF World Tennis Tour event in Orlando, Fla. The third-seeded pair will open up Tuesday against Gabriela Talaba and Marcela Zacarias. Harrison is in singles qualifying and has already posted a three-set win over fellow American Reese Braintmeier, 6-7, 6-2, 1-0(8). She will next meet María Lourdes Carlé of Argentina in her quest to join Anderson in the main draw. Anderson is set to take on Rebecca Šramková of Slovakia in the first round Wednesday.
