UCLA Drops Game One to Gauchos, 10-4

May 14, 2021 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Despite collecting 15 hits, the No. 22-ranked UCLA baseball team dropped its series opener to UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium by a score of 10-4.

Six separate players finished with multiple hits for the Bruins (28-16), led by senior left fielder Kyle Cuellar's 3-4 day. Junior third baseman Mikey Perez went 2-4 with a pair of extra-base hits, and Kevin Kendall, JT Schwartz, Noah Cardenas, and Kyle Karros all had two hits as well. UCLA has now put double digits up on the hit column in four straight games.

Sophomore righty Charles Harrison and junior right-hander Jack Filby were both solid out of the pen for the Bruins, with Harrison allowing just one hit over 1 2/3 innings and Filby recording a nine-pitch, 1-2-3 eighth inning.

Right fielder Zach Rodriguez went 2-4 and had a team-high four RBIs for the Gauchos (31-16), while catcher Mason Eng went 3-5 and scored three runs.

UCSB starter Michael McGreevy struck out a dozen and only allowed one run, but also allowed 10 hits over 6 1/3 innings. He picked up the win to move to 7-1 on the year.

Perez got the Bruins on the board with a solo shot off McGreevy in the bottom of the fifth, making it 7-1 at the time.

The Bruins proceeded to make a late charge, producing runs in both the eighth and ninth innings. The ninth in particular looked promising, with the first two batters of the frame reaching to set up an RBI double down the right field line for Schwartz.

UCSB would make a pitching change after that two-bagger however, and right-hander Conner Roberts proceeded to retire the next three batters in order to stem the rally and end the game.

UCLA and UCSB continue the split-venue series on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. game at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium in Santa Barbara.
