Bling Sits in Second Place after Day One of Southwestern Invitational

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – Graduate Devon Bling posted his lowest score of the season with a 5-under 67 to put himself one stroke behind the leader in second place after round one of the Southwestern Invitational at North Ranch Country Club on Monday. As a team, UCLA sits in fourth place amongst 12 schools at even par 288.
No. 13 Georgia owns a four-stroke advantage over its next closest competitor at 9-under 279, and the Bulldogs' Trent Phillips is the lone golfer ahead of Bling on the individual leaderboard at 6-under 66.
Bling had a flawless round following his one and only bogey on the opening hole and proceeding to knock down six birdies on the par-5 fourth, par-5 sixth, par-3 10th, par-5 12th, par-3 13th and par-5 15th. Bling shot a 4-under 32 on the back nine.
Graduate Eddy Lai was UCLA's other top-20 finisher, tying for 19th with an even-par 72. Lai head into his last three holes at 2-over before sinking two birdies on the par-4 16th and 18th.
Freshman Pablo Ereño Perez parred 14 of his 18 holes while recording one birdie on the par-5 12th, finishing the day at 2-over 74. Freshman Evan Chien scored a 3-over 75 in his first round of collegiate golf. Chien birdied twice on the par-4 second and par-5 12th.
Freshman Alvaro Muller Baumgart Lucena posted a 5-over 77.
The Bruins will tee off for round two of the Southwestern Invitational tomorrow beginning at 9:10 a.m. PT with Alvaro Muller. Bling tees off last at 10:06 a.m. Viewers can watch live action of the tournament on the Golf Channel beginning at 1:30 p.m. PT.
