No. 5 UCLA Defeats Cal, 60-52

January 08, 2022 | Men's Basketball

BERKELEY, Calif. โ€“ Tyger Campbell scored a team-high 17 points and Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 14 points as the No. 5-ranked UCLA men's basketball team won at California, 60-52, in a Pac-12 contest on Saturday at Haas Pavilion.

Playing their second game in three days, the Bruins (10-1, 2-0 Pac-12) led throughout the second half after having built a 31-25 cushion at halftime. UCLA pushed its second-half cushion to as many as 13 points with 5:10 to play after Campbell nailed his second 3-pointer of the game. ย

Leading 33-29 with 17:57 to play in the second half, Cal's Andre Kelly reduced the Bruins' lead to 33-31 with 15:52 to play. From that point, the Bruins took advantage of a 7-0 scoring run behind four points from Jaquez Jr. and three points from Cody Riley. That burst helped UCLA extend its margin to nine points (at 40-31, with just under 13 minutes to play).

Riley finished the game with nine points and a career-high four steals, the last of which he snagged in transition at the 5:56 mark and tossed to Campbell who found Johnny Juzang for the assist and layup to put UCLA back up double-digits, 49-39.

Cal's Jalen Celestineย helped the Golden Bears overcome an early deficit, sinking a 3-pointer at the 11:53 mark to put the Cal ahead of UCLA, 11-9. Six minutes later, Campbell drove through the lane, pivoted and shook his defender loose with a spin move for a layup to put UCLA back ahead, 20-19. The Bruins did not trail for the remainder of the game.
ย
After neither team gaining more than a three-point lead for the first 16 minutes of the first half, Jaime Jaquez Jr. rallied for six of his 10 first-half points amidst an 8-0 UCLA run to push the Bruins out to their largest lead of the half at 29-21 with 1:28 remaining.
