Bruins Edged by Stanford in Home Finale, 1-0

October 23, 2022 | Men's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to No. 5 Stanford on Sunday afternoon at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

The Bruins, who have now conceded one goal or fewer in nine consecutive games, dropped to 8-5-1, 3-3-1 with the result. The Cardinal improved to 9-1-4, 3-1-3.

Shane de Flores scored the game's lone goal, putting home a Keegan Tingey cross at the 70:08 mark.

The Bruins had multiple opportunities to score in the second half, but ultimately couldn't find the back of the net.

Sophomore forward Aaron Edwards had two of UCLA's best looks. In the 47th minute, he drilled a shot from just above the box that necessitated a diving stop from Stanford keeper Matt Frank. Then in the 58th minute, the Bruins forced a turnover that led to an odd-man rush, resulting in a close-range shot from Edwards that went over the bar.

A pair of clutch defensive plays kept the Bruins close, with senior forward Kevin Diaz making a goal-line stop off a set piece in the 68th minute and sophomore goalie Nate Crockford laying out to deny a Carlo Agostinelli drive in the 75th.

Sunday marked the final regular season home game of the year for Bruins, who honored seven players at halftime as part of Senior Day: Diaz, Jose Sosa, Riley Ferch, Constantinos Michaelides, Ollie de Visser, Nicolas Blassou, and Luke Bone.

UCLA plays its next four games on the road, starting with a 9:00 a.m. PT contest at Rutgers on Saturday, Oct. 29.
