CROSSTOWN SHOWDOWN TO CLOSE THE REGULAR SEASON ย ย
No. 1-ranked UCLA (17-1-0, 9-1-0 in the Pac-12) will wrap up the 2022 regular season on Friday, Nov. 4 with the Crosstown Showdown at No. 14-ranked USC (11-2-3, 7-1-2). The sold-out match will take place at 2pm at McAlister Field and will be televised live on Pac-12 Network. A UCLA win would clinch at least a share of the Pac-12 title.
PLAYING FOR THE PAC ย ย
The Bruins enter the season finale tied for first in the Pac-12 standings with Stanford with 27 points. If the two teams remain tied after Friday's games (UCLA at USC at 2pm and Stanford at California at 3pm), they will finish as co-champions. In the tie scenario, however, the Cardinal, will earn the Pac-12's automatic NCAA bid by virtue of head-to-head competition, a 1-0 Stanford victory on Oct. 14. UCLA is looking to win its third consecutive Pac-12 title, having won the championship outright in both 2021 and 2020.
LAST TIME OUT
UCLA scored three goals in the second half en route to a 3-0 Senior Day victory over Washington on Oct. 30. Senior Jackie Gilday provided the perfect ending to the game, scoring her first career goal in the 88th minute. Ally Cook scored the game-winner in the 49th minute, and Quincy McMahon added a goal in the 56th minute. The Bruins outshot the Huskies 21-2, allowing just one shot in each half. Lauren Brzykcy picked up her seventh shutout of the season and UCLA's fourth consecutive. ย ย
REALE WINS UCLA's FOURTH PAC-12 DEFENSIVE AWARD
Sophomore Lilly Reale earned her second career Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award after leading the Bruins to a pair of shutout victories over Washington State (1-0) and Washington (3-0). Reale and the Bruins have shut out four consecutive and 12 total opponents this season and allowed only eight total shots on the weekend โ six by Washington State and just two by Washington. Additionally, Reale, who played the full 90 in both games, scored the only goal in the 62nd minute to beat the Cougars. It was her first goal of the year and second of her career. Reale is the fourth Bruin to win the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award in 2022. ย ย
SCOUTING THE TROJANS
USC enters the game with an 11-2-3 overall record and a 7-1-2 conference record. The Trojans swept the Washington schools last week, beating Washington, 2-1, and Washington State, 3-2. Croix Bethune is USC's leading scorer with eight goals and 25 points, and she also leads the Pac-12 with nine assists. Simone Jackson has six goals, including the game-winner against the Cougars on Sunday. USC is led by first-year head coach Jane Alukonis, who was a UCLA assistant coach from 2018-21. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
THE SERIES WITH USCย
UCLA holds a 27-6-3 series advantage over USC and is unbeaten against the Trojans in the last seven games, going 5-0-2 since 2016. The Bruins won last year's matchup, 3-1, at Wallis Annenberg Stadium, with Reilyn Turner scoring the game's first goal and assisting on Olivia Athens' game-winning goal. The last time the two teams met at USC, they finished in a 2-2 tie at the Coliseum on April 16, 2021. This will be the first time in 10 years that the two teams have played on McAlister Field. ย ย
BRUWIN #500 ย
UCLA's 1-0 victory over Washington State on Thursday night marked the 500th in program history. UCLA is the fastest to 500 in the Pac-12, reaching the milestone win in its 30th season. Stanford is the only other program in the conference with 500, achieved in its 34th year. UCLA's all-time program record is now 501-108-48 (.798). ย ย
BRUINS WIN 13 TO START SEASON ย
UCLA's 13-game winning streak to start the season came to an end after a 1-0 loss at No. 9 Stanford on Oct. 14. The Bruins' 13-0 start was the best start in school history, surpassing the 2001 squad's 11 victories to start the year. Strong starts have been commonplace for the Bruins in recent years, as they have won at least their first eight games in each of the last three seasons. ย
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE NUMBER ONE? ย ย
For the ninth consecutive week, UCLA ranks No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The last time UCLA held the top spot in the United Soccer Coaches poll prior to this season was 2017, when the Bruins were No. 1 for five weeks from Sept. 5-Oct. 3. UCLA's Sept. 4 win over No. 1 North Carolina was its second ever over a top-ranked team and second in a row after beating No. 1 Florida State on Aug. 29, 2019. ย ย ย
1-2 PUNCH ย ย
UCLA boasts two 20+ point and nine goal scorers in Sunshine Fontes and Reilyn Turner. Turner leads the conference in game-winning goals (6) and ranks seventh in goals scored (9) and ninth in points (21). The dynamic duo have each recorded a hat trick this season, with Fontes scoring three goals in 48 minutes of action against CSUN on Aug. 25, and Turner recording her second career hat trick on Oct. 2 after scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of play at Oregon. Fontes has recorded a goal or an assist in nine of UCLA's last 12 games. Turner has two multiple-goal games this season, all in conference play, and has tallied six in her career to move into fifth all-time at UCLA. ย ย ย ย
HATS OFFย
This season, Sunshine Fontes and Reilyn Turner became the first pair of Bruins to record hat tricks in the same year since Danesha Adams and Lauren Cheney did it in 2007. Fontes was the first to record a hat trick, the first of her career, on Aug. 25 vs. CSUN. Turner recorded her second career hat trick in the first half of the Bruins' game at Oregon on Oct. 2. Turner became the fifth player in UCLA history to record multiple hat tricks, joining Traci Arkenberg (5), Sydney Leroux (3), Sarah-Gayle Swanson (2) and Adams (2). ย ย ย ย

Ally Lemos and Sofia Cook have earned Top 20 recognition by Top Drawer Soccer on its midseason Top 100 Freshman list, ranking No. 3 and No. 18, respectively. Lemos is one of just two players to start every game for the Bruins, and she leads all field players with 1,365 minutes played. She ranks second on the team in assists with six and scored her first collegiate goal in the 4-0 win over Arizona State on Oct. 6. Cook, who has played in 17 games and started seven, ranks third on the team in goals (six) and points (15). ย ย ย ย
BRICK WALL BRZYKCY
Graduate student Lauren Brzykcy has been a nearly impenetrable brick wall this season, leading the Pac-12 in goals against average (0.44), save percentage (.854) and wins (17) and ranking second in shutouts (7 solo, 5 shared). She tied her career-high in single-game saves with nine at No. 2 Duke, and she has moved into a tie for fourth on UCLA's career saves list with 202 and counting. She also recently moved into UCLA's Top 5 for career shutouts with 27 (fifth) and for wins with 54 (fourth). Brzykcy has been honored as the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week three times this season, running her career total to eight, which ties former teammate Teagan Micah for most in school and conference history. ย ย
VIVA MEXICO ย
Three of Mexico's finest - full national team member Maricarmen Reyes and Under-20 national team members Bridgette Marin-Valencia and America Frias - are with the Bruins in 2022 and all saw action for the first time together on Sept. 11 vs. Cal State Fullerton. In that game, Reyes scored the game-winner, a sharp-angled screamer for her second goal of the season, and Marin-Valencia picked up her first collegiate assist in her first game. Frias also made her season debut in that game. Reyes and Marin-Valencia also teamed up to assist on the Bruins' second goal at Pepperdine on Sept. 18, and they combined for three goals (two from Reyes) in UCLA's 4-2 win over Cal on Sept. 23. Reyes is sixth on the team in scoring with 11 points (4g, 3a), and Marin-Valencia has six points (2g, 2a) in 12 games and earned her first collegiate start at Stanford. Frias has played in seven games this season. ย ย ย ย ย ย

She recorded her first collegiate goal on Aug. 25 against CSUN and also added an assist. She assisted on the game-winner at No. 2 Duke and scored the second-half equalizer to jump-start UCLA's comeback win at No. 1 North Carolina. Wright collected two assists in the Bruins' 4-0 win over Arizona State. ย ย ย ย ย ย
JACK ATTACK ย
Senior midfielder Jackie Gilday has seen great success in a comeback season. After sitting out the last two seasons due to injury, she has come back in 2022 to play in 15 games and make four starts. On Senior Day on Oct. 30, she scored her first career goal with a long-distance strike. Gilday played the full 90 in the Bruins' 1-0 win at Santa Clara and has 10 games with 45+ minutes played. She is a member of the Nicaraguan National Team and scored two goals in World Cup qualifying this Spring. ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย
RETURN OF THE MACย
In her first year of action since tearing her ACL in January of 2020, midfielder MacKenzee Vance has shown she is fully back and here to stay. In just her third game, Vance scored her first goal at Pepperdine, collecting a long pass from Madelyn Desiano, swerving past the charging goalkeeper and shooting into the empty net. She picked up her first career assist at Oregon State, making a strong move to lose her defender and then passing to Sunshine Fontes for the one-timer. She has started in the last four games and contributed a goal and an assist in the Bruins' 6-0 win at Colorado and an assist in the 3-0 win at Utah. Vance, who was a member of U.S. Youth National Teams from 2015-20, has played in 12 games this season, totaling two goals and three assists. ย ย
KALI COMEBACKย
Senior forward Kali Trevithick has spent the better part of her four years on the injured list, having undergone multiple knee surgeries. She began her freshman season on a tear, scoring two goals and two assists in the team's first two exhibition games and started the first four regular season contests before a knee injury knocked her out until November. She played the final six games of the year and totaled two goals and one assist. Trevithick missed all but the final two games of the 2020-21 campaign and all of the 2021 season but finally got back on the pitch on Sept. 11 for her first game since May 5, 2021. She made the most of her return, scoring less than two minutes after entering the game against CSUN. Two minutes after that, she scored her second goal in the Bruins' 5-1 victory. She scored her third goal in three games at Oregon and has now played in 20 career games with five goals and three assists. On Oct. 2 at Oregon State, Trevithick played 33 minutes, the most she has played since Dec. 6, 2019 in the College Cup semifinals. ย
TURNER BURNS THREE TOP 10 TEAMSย
Junior forward Reilyn Turner has stepped up on the biggest stages this season, with three of her nine goals coming against Top 10 teams on the road, and all three being game-winners. Her first goal came at No. 2 Duke on Sept. 1, a second-half goal to break a 1-1 tie. Three days later, she scored the game-winner in the 84th minute to beat No. 1 North Carolina. Turner made it 3-for-3 when she scored the opening goal in the Bruins' 4-0 win at No. 9 Pepperdine. ย Turner leads the nation with six game-winning goals and has 12 in her career, which ranks 10th all-time at UCLA. ย ย
ROLLING IN THE DEEPย
UCLA has had 17 different players score a total of 53 goals this season, with seven scoring three or more goals. Sunshine Fontes and Reilyn Turner lead the squad with nine goals apiece, followed by Sofia Cook with six. A total of 31 players have seen game action, with 20 playing 10 or more games. ย ย ย
STALWART STARTERS ย
With a deep and talented squad at her disposal, head coach Margueritte Aozasa has been able to seamlessly shuffle her starting lineup from game to game. Two players, however, have earned starts in all 18 games - goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy and freshman midfielder Ally Lemos. Lilly Reale has 17 starts; Jayden Perry, Madelyn Desiano and Quincy McMahon have 16 each; Reilyn Turner has 15; Sunshine Fontes has 14; and Maricarmen Reyes, Ally Cook and Lexi Wright have 12 each.
GOALKEEPING CREW SHARE SHUTOUT
All four of UCLA's goalkeepers saw action in the Bruins' 6-0 win over CSUN on Aug. 25. Lauren Brzykcy earned the victory, starting and playing 30 minutes before Kelly McManus replaced her for the remainder of the half with the Bruins up 3-0. McManus made one save in 15 minutes of action. In her first game back from the FIFA U-20 World Cup, freshman Neeku Purcell started the second half and played 35 minutes, making one save. Faith Nguyen made her collegiate debut, closing the game and preserving the clean sheet for the entire group. Purcell has played in six other games this season and has yet to allow a goal in 156 minutes, totaling five shared shutouts. ย ย ย ย ย
UCLA RECORDS TOP TWO SWEEPย
UCLA posted a pair of 2-1 road victories over the nation's top two teams to start September, downing No. 2 Duke on Sept. 1 and No. 1 North Carolina on Sept. 4. Reilyn Turner scored the game-winning goal in both games, breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute against the Blue Devils and then completing the comeback against North Carolina with an 84th minute goal. Lexi Wright assisted on Turner's game-winner at Duke and scored the tying goal at North Carolina. Defender Jayden Perry scored the Bruins' other goal, converting a penalty kick at Duke for the game's first score. Goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy tied her career-high in saves with nine at Duke and then made four clutch saves in the win at North Carolina. ย ย ย ย
GLAD FOR GRADS
Four Bruins - Lauren Brzykcy, Ally Cook, Madelyn Desiano and Maricarmen Reyes - have extended their collegiate careers while earning a Master's degree in Transformative Coaching and Leadership at the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies. Brzykcy is in her sixth season with the Bruins, having joined the Bruins in 2017. She redshirted that season and received an extra year of eligibility due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Desiano arrived in Spring 2018 and had to sit both 2018 and 2019 due to knee injuries. Reyes' first season was 2018, and although she has played in each of the last three years, she has missed time each season due to injuries or National Team obligations. Cook is in her first year at UCLA, having transferred after three years at Oregon (2019-21).ย
NEW FACESย
The Bruins have undergone a transformation since last season, with new head coach Margueritte Aozasa (Santa Clara '12) taking the reins as head coach of the Bruins on Dec. 29, 2021. Aozasa was an assistant coach at Stanford for seven years, helping guide the Cardinal to NCAA Championships in 2017 and 2019 and Pac-12 titles from 2015-19. Joining the coaching staff were assistant coaches Gof Boyoko, Molly Poletto and Chelsea Tudela.ย
UCLA also welcomed 12 new players to the squad in 2022, including 10 freshmen who make up the nation's top-ranked freshman class. Seven of those players were ranked in Top Drawer Soccer's Top 25 - Kathryn Kelly (No. 7), Neeku Purcell (No. 8), Ellie Walbruch (No. 16), Sofia Cook (No. 19), Peyton Marcisz (No. 20), America Frias (No. 22) and Ally Lemos (No. 24). Walbruch, Cook and Lemos all joined the team early during Winter quarter and had a chance to train and play with the Bruins in the Spring. Also new to the squad are transfers Ally Cook (Oregon) and Maya Evans (California). Cook was a three-year starting forward for the Ducks and earned second-team All-Pacific Region and third-team All-Pac-12 honors last season after leading the team with eight goals and 20 points. Evans comes to UCLA after two seasons in Berkeley. As a freshman in 2020, she started in 11 of 13 games and led the team with 975 minutes played, earning Pac-12 All-Freshman honors.ย
