Jones Lifts No. 20/21 UCLA Past Jackson State with Late Game Buckets
November 25, 2022 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Despite Jackson State's best efforts, the No. 20/21 UCLA Bruins improved to 7-0 behind key fourth-quarter baskets from freshman Londynn Jones. Jones scored six of UCLA's 13 points in the final period on 2-for-3 shooting and totaled 16 in the game.
Senior Charisma Osborne led all scorers with 20 points (7-15 FG, 2-6 3FG) and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Graduate guard Gina Conti added six assists, and freshman Lina Sontag grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in Friday's victory.
Despite foul trouble from UCLA's forwards, the Bruins still won the rebounding battle 43-38. UCLA outpaced the Tigers 15-4 on fast break points and poured in 22 points from the bench, led primarily by Jones' career scoring night.
UCLA got out to a roaring start in the first quarter, shooting 11-for-18 from the field (5-for-11 from beyond the arc) in the first ten minutes of play. The Bruins jumped out to a 12-2 run to start the game, capped by a reverse layup by freshman Kiki Rice that helped her dodge a big defender in transition.
Osborne had nine points in the opening period on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting performance in the first. The Bruins led 27-21 going into the second quarter.
The offense cooled off in the second, with the team shooting just over 35% from the field in the quarter. The Tigers got it within one point (Q2 - 7:13, 29-28) but never took the lead away from the Bruins. Freshman Christine Iwuala converted an and-one layup over the 6-foot-5 Daphane White to get UCLA a four-point lead, but the teams would trade buckets until late in the quarter. Charisma Osborne strung together two possessions in the final minute of the half, scoring two free throws and a midrange jumper to push UCLA ahead 43-35 going into the break.
Gina Conti and Kiki Rice got to the paint for a pair of layups early in the third quarter, getting UCLA's lead back into double digits. Rice had five points in the quarter, and freshman teammate Lina Sontag added six more in the third. The freshmen connected as Rice whipped a pass into the lane to a cutting Sontag for an open layup (Q3, 3:19). UCLA finished the third with a 13-point advantage over the Tigers.
Jackson State went on a 13-3 run to start the final period of play to cut deeply into UCLA's lead, but Jones hit a three to stop the bleeding halfway through the period (Q4, 5:19). Osborne would hit a three of her own to push the lead back to seven with just over three minutes to play, but neither team could find the bottom of the basket for the next six possessions.
Enter Londynn Jones. Charisma Osborne drew two defenders on the right elbow and Jones found her way to the corner. Osborne zipped a bounce pass to the lefty who drained the three, and the Bruins were back up double digits.
Jackson State began to foul to send the Bruins to the foul line, but they chose Osborne and Conti as their targets in the final minute. The vets shot 4-for-4 in the last 20 seconds of the game to seal the victory for UCLA.
