MVB Swings Past GCU In Three

The No. 1 ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (12-2, 4-0) used a season-high 14 kills from Kevin Kobrine to sweep past No. 8 Grand Canyon (9-8, 3-3) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played on Friday evening in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the contest were 25-18, 25-20, 25-21. The Bruins hit .462 on the night which marked their third straight match hitting over the .400 mark.
The Bruins started fast with a 5-1 lead in set one after three straight kills from Guy Genis. Kobrine's third straight kill handed UCLA a 11-6 lead. Miles Partain's swing pushed the advantage to 15-9. GCU closed to 15-12. UCLA responded with three straight points to go up by 18-12. Kobrine's eighth kill of the set lifted the Bruins to a 22-13 margin. A GCU service error ended the set at 25-18. UCLA hit .630 for the frame with just one error on 27 swings.
UCLA broke a 3-all tie with three straight points to open up a 6-3 lead at the start to set two. A Merrick McHenry/Kobrine block increased the advantage to 11-6. GCU closed to 13-11 before the 'Lopes ran off four of the next five points to take the lead at 14-15. UCLA came right back behind the serve of Alex Knight and a pair of Genis kills for a 16-15 lead. An Ethan Champlin kill made it 19-15. Miles Partain won a joust for a 21-16 edge. Combo blocks by McHenry and Knight produced the final two Bruin points for a 25-20 win.
The early lead went back-and-forth in set three until a McHenry kill and a GCU error broke an 8-all tie. The score was then tied at points 10-14. Another McHenry swing pushed UCLA in front and ignited a four-point run for a 18-14 edge which was culminated by a Knight kill. The Bruins led 20-16 after a Genis kill. GCU closed the gap to 23-21 after a block and a couple of Bruin errors. A pair of Champlin swings ended the set at 25-21 and earned a fourth straight win for UCLA.
