UCLA Downs Ole Miss to Reach Super Regionals

May 22, 2022 | Softball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 5-seed UCLA softball team advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals round Sunday, earning a 9-1 mercy-rule victory against Ole Miss at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins (46-8) advanced out of the Los Angeles Regional without a loss, previously beating Grand Canyon University Friday (12-1) and Loyola Marymount Saturday (7-1). They will also be at home for the Super Regional round, with dates and times to be announced. The third-round trip represents the eighth in a row for UCLA.

Holly Azevedo held the Rebels (41-19) hitless for 4.2 innings before surrendering a run-scoring single. She posted three strikeouts and two walks, improving to 19-2 on the season. Megan Faraimo came on in relief and struck out the final batter with the bases loaded.

Offensively, Maya Brady, Alyssa Garcia, Savannah Pola, Anna Vines and Delanie Wisz tallied two hits apiece. Vines reached base each of the three times she stepped to the plate, driving in a career-high five runs. She had previously never driven in more than two in a game. Vines' big blow came on a third-inning three-run home run, her first of the campaign.

Five of the first six UCLA batters got on base by way of base hit, driving Ole Miss starter Anna Borgen (7-11) from the game. Wisz got scoring underway with a shot to the left-centerย gap that brought Kinsley Washington home. Brady and Garcia followed with run-scoring hits and Vines knocked in two more off Catelyn Riley for a 5-0 advantage to cap the efforts. In the bottom half of the inning, Azevedo needed just 11 pitches to put the Rebels down in order.

Washington also led off the top of the second, drawing a walk. Riley ensured no Bruins would reach second base, though. Aynslie Furbush of Ole Miss drew a walk with one out in the bottom of the second, but UCLA turned a double play to end the inning, as Wisz went to her knees at third base before going around the horn.

The Bruins provided more offensive fireworks in the third inning, with Brady singling up the middle to lead off the performance. Two batters later, Pola brought Brady home with a double to left center. Then, following a Faraimo walk, Vines picked a prime moment to deliver her first home run of the season. The drive to straightaway center field made it 9-0. The Rebels failed to get a ball out of the infield in the bottom half, as Azevedo logged another 1-2-3 frame.

Wisz and Garcia singled in the top of the fourth. Lauren Hatch came on for Wisz as a pinch runner and reached third base, but UCLA was kept off the board. Azevedo struck out the first two batters in the bottom half and induced a flyout to again keep Ole Miss off the basepaths.

Vines walked in the top half of the fifth, but no further damage was done. Azevedo quickly turned away the first two Ole Miss batters in the bottom of the inning before walking Keila Kamoku. An ensuing fielding error put runners on first and second before Paige Smith hit the RBIย single to right. Following a hit by pitch to load the bases, Faraimo struck out Tate Whitley swinging to ensure a sixth inning would not be needed.
