Bruins Thwarted in Fourth by No. 2 Stanford, Lose 72-59
January 14, 2023 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – UCLA Women's Basketball dropped its third game of the season against No. 2 Stanford on Friday night. The Bruins move to 14-3 (3-2 Pac-12) while The Cardinal improves to 17-1 (5-0 Pac-12) with Friday's 59-72 loss in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
"We have to take responsibility, and […] I'm ultimately responsible," said Cori Close at the postgame press conference. "I have to figure out a way to get us to execute in the second half on the things that are under our control."
Three Bruins ended the game in double figures – Gina Conti had 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including a trio of three-point makes. Conti added three assists, tying Londynn Jones for the team-high in Friday's game. Emily Bessoir had 10 points
Charisma Osborne rounded out the Bruins in double-digit scoring, adding 13 points and seven rebounds to the box score. Osborne had a team-high three steals in the conference matchup.
It was a historic night for Osborne in the record books, as she became the 20th women's basketball student-athlete to reach 1,500 career points at UCLA. Osborne converted a layup through contact late in the second quarter, drawing a shooting foul as she sunk her attempt in the paint. With the lay-in bucket, the senior hit exactly 1,500 points in her storied career in Westwood.
The Bruins kept the contest close throughout the first three quarters of play, battling back and forth with The Cardinal. UCLA trailed by a point after the first quarter but tied the game going into halftime, and the Bruins trailed by just two points (49-51) heading into the final ten minutes of play. UCLA met the wrath of Cameron Brink in the fourth quarter – Brink blocked six Bruin shot attempts, sending back a third of UCLA's field goal attempts in the final period.
