Freshmen Sontag and Rice Help Lift Bruins Past Washington, 51-47

January 21, 2023 | Women's Basketball

SEATTLE – The No. 9/13 UCLA women's basketball team put together a second-half comeback to defeat Washington 51-47 in Alaska Airlines Arena on Friday night. The Bruins improve to 16-3 (5-2 Pac-12) while the Huskies fall to 10-7 (2-5 Pac-12).

Lina Sontag and Kiki Rice combined for 17 of the Bruins' 33 second-half points to overcome a nine-point halftime deficit. Sontag finished with 11 points, eight rebounds, a steal and a pair of blocks; Rice had 12 points on an efficient 6-for-10 shooting, grabbing four rebounds in the win. Charisma Osborne added 12 points and drew a team-high seven fouls in Friday's game.

The Bruins came out on top despite losing the rebound battle (37-46 in favor of Washington). UCLA had six steals to the Huskies' four and won the turnover battle, finishing with five fewer turnovers than Washington.

The host Huskies did not have a single scorer in double figures; guard Jayda Noble finished with a team-high nine points for Washington.

"I don't want to take anything away from how well Washington played," said the Michael Price Family UCLA Women's Head Basketball Coach Cori Close. "I know our team, I believe in our team, and we can play so much better. We need to be responsible to do so."

Both teams started slow out of the gates – Washington led 10-5 after the first 10 minutes of play. The teams combined to shoot 6-for-31 in the first quarter.

Washington began to find its rhythm in the second, with forward Darcy Rees providing scoring off the bench. Rees had six points on 3-for-4 shooting in just over four and a half minutes of play. Haley Van Dyke made a layup as time was winding down to put the Huskies up 27-15 with four seconds on the clock. The Bruins quickly inbounded the ball to Charisma Osborne who rushed to the purple "W" logo at mid court; Osborne launched a heat-seeking missile from beyond half court that found the bottom of the net. The Bruins went into halftime trailing by nine, 18-27.

UCLA opened up the third on a 16-0 scoring run, claiming its first lead of the game three minutes into the quarter (28-27). The Bruins would go on to hold the Huskies scoreless until 2:59 remained on the clock. Sontag scored seven of UCLA's 16 points during the hot streak.

The fourth quarter was filled with fouls, free throws and missed field goals for both the Bruin and Husky squads. Each team committed eight fouls, and both teams attempted eight free throws in the final period of play. Neither team shot better than 30% from the field in the last frame (UCLA – 3-for-11, 27.3%; Washington – 3-for-13, 23.1%). UCLA held on as Washington missed two of its four free throws and a three-point attempt in the final 10 seconds of the game.

Up Next: at Washington State (Jan. 22)

The Bruins travel to Pullman to take on the Washington State Cougars on Sunday, Jan. 22. Tipoff is slated for 12 p.m. PST and the game will be broadcast on Pac-12 Los Angeles.
