No. 3 UCLA Off to 3-0 Start, Defeats No. 15 Wagner, 14-7

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.ย โ Freshmen Taylor Smith and Anna Pearson, sophomore Emma Lineback and junior Malia Allen each scored two goalsย to lead the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team (3-0) past 15th-ranked Wagner (3-1), 14-7, in the second game of the UCSB Winter Invite on Saturday afternoon at UCSB's Campus Pool.
A total of 10 Bruins got into the scoring column in the victory with sophomore Nicole Struss scoring her first goal of the 2023 season.
Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips got the start in goal and registered a season-high nine saves while allowing four goals.ย Junior Sydney Chiang played the second half in the cage, tallying four savesย while surrendering three scores.

Phillips and the Bruins' defense got off to a good start with Phillips tallying six stops in the first period while UCLA raced out to a 5-2 lead. Freshman Genoa Rossi opened the scoring with a goal from two meters and graduate student Ava Johnson followed with a got at set as well. Smith scored her first goal on a 6-on-4 opportunity and Pearson got her first from two meters. Graduate student Val Ayala found the back of the net from the front court to end the scoring in the period.
Both teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the second period as UCLA took a 7-4 lead into the break. Senior Katrina Drake opened the scoring with a power play goal and Lineback ended it with her first goal of the game on a power play as well.
UCLA won the third quarter 3-1 to build a 10-5 lead heading into the final stanza. Smith scored her second of the game on a power play and then Struss found the back of the net from two meters. Sophomore Molly Renner ended the scoring in the thirdย with a strike from the front court.

The Bruins won the fourth quarter, 4-2, to provide the 14-7 final. Pearson scored her second of the game from two meters to open the scoring in the final stanza for the Bruins. Lineback chipped in her second of the game from the front court, and then Allen ended the scoring for UCLA with back-to-back goals (front court and 7-on-6).

Carlota Alonsoย had a game-high three scores for Wagner. UCSB did not provide goalie stats for Wagner.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they take on No. 11 UC San Diego at 10:30 a.m. at UCSB's Campus Pool.
