Bruins Storm from Behind to Complete Regular Season Sweep of Trojans

January 08, 2023 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – UCLA Women's Basketball (14-2, 3-1 Pac-12) overcame a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat USC (11-4, 1-3 Pac-12) on Sunday. The Bruins outscored the Trojans 21-8 in the fourth quarter to secure the 61-60 victory in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

UCLA cleaned the glass in the rivalry matchup, grabbing 40 boards to USC's 29. The Bruins secured 15 offensive boards and only allowed the Trojans four offensive rebounds in the game. UCLA held USC to 25% from three-point land (3-for-12 3FG) and 25% in the fourth quarter (2-for-8 FG).

Londynn Jones ran the show for the Bruins, scoring a season-high 22 points (6-11 FG, 8-9 FT) in the victory. Jones has scored in double digits in four of her last five games. Emily Bessoir was the only other Bruin in double figures, putting in 11 points on 4-for-7 shooting (3-for-5 3FG).

In her return to action, Charisma Osborne added nine points and a team-leading seven rebounds. Osborne drew 10 fouls in the game without committing a single personal foul, and she sunk five of her six free throw attempts.

The Bruins opened action in a battle with the Trojans, narrowly leading 19-17 through the first 10 minutes. Jones shot a perfect 100 percent from the field and the line, including a trio of free throws as time was winding down. The freshman drew a foul on her half-court heave with 0.2 seconds on the clock, then she sunk all of her charity stripe attempts.

The Bruins cooled off in the second as the Trojans began to ramp up. Bessoir knocked down an early three-pointer, and UCLA and USC continued to trade buckets throughout the quarter. The Bruins trailed 30-34 going into the break.

Camryn Brown made her presence known early in the third quarter, sending back a USC attempt under the basket. The Bruins struggled from the field in the period, shooting a season-low 3-for-20 in the third quarter. Jones scored another six of her points in the third, and the Bruins went into the final period trailing 40-52.

UCLA was down but not out, and a fire was lit as the fourth quarter began. UCLA scored 10 unanswered points behind an effort from Osborne, Bessoir and Jones. The run was capped by two-consecutive layups by Jones – the last bucket came off a steal from Osborne that quickly led to a Bruin score.

UCLA trailed until there was 3:31 left in the quarter. Bessoir knocked down a three as the shot clock buzzer rang, then Osborne knocked down a midrange jumper after Lina Sontag swiped the ball from the Trojans on their defensive end. USC had seven turnovers in the final ten minutes, but the Bruins did not cough up the ball once in the fourth quarter. UCLA scored six free throws in the final minutes of the game to secure the victory.

UP NEXT: vs. No. 2/2 Stanford (Jan. 13)

The Bruins return to action Friday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. against the No. 2-ranked Cardinal. UCLA hosts Stanford inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom, and the game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Bay Area.
