UCLA to Compete at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's golf team plays its third fall tournament at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational in Alpharetta, Ga. this week, beginning Friday, Oct. 13.
The three-day, 54-hole stroke play event runs through Sunday, Oct. 15. Live scoring is available at this link. The field features 14 teams, including six who competed at the 2023 NCAA Championships and 12 in NCAA Regionals.
UCLA Lineup: Luke Powell, Omar Morales, Kyle An, Pablo Ereño and Mason Greene.
The Field: Charlotte, Clemson, Duke, East Tennessee State (11), Georgia Tech (12, host), Northwestern, Pepperdine, Southern California, Tennessee (5), Texas A&M (21), UCLA, Virginia (25), Wake Forest, Washington (7).
Weather Report: Cloudy with chance of rain on Friday. Temperatures fluctuate in the 70s on Friday and Saturday while Sunday has a high of 63 degrees.

History at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational
The Bruins have been regular participants at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational. UCLA, who began competing in the second rendition of the event in 2007, will be making its 15th appearance.
UCLA has secured one team victory in the event's 16-year history in 2011 and finished runner-up three times. Two Bruins have earned medalist honors: Eddy Lai (2019) and Erik Flores (2009).
Last Time Out
Powell won his first collegiate medal in just his second tournament as a Bruin at 17-under 199 at the Hamptons Intercollegiate on Oct. 3. His performance earned him Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Week honors on Tuesday.
UCLA finished third as a team at 20-under 843.
Powell's 17-under (64-67-68) is the second lowest 54-hole score in relation to par in program history. His total score of 199 is tied for the third lowest 54-hole score in program history and was the lowest by a Bruin in 11 years since Pontus Widegren's 18-under 198 at the 2012 Cal State San Marcos Fall Invitational.
Morales, who competed as an individual, recorded his third career top 10 finish, tying for fifth at 5-under 211. Morales shot back-to-back 69s to begin the tournament. An and Ereño finished in the top 20. An tied for 11th at 3-under for the best finish of his collegiate career with three steady rounds of 70-72-71.
Freshman Phenom
Powell has had a dominant start to his UCLA career with two top-3 finishes in his first two tournaments. The Laguna Niguel, Calif. native has shot six consecutive under par rounds to begin the season, including five in the 60s. He leads the Bruins with a 67.5 scoring average.
Powell opened round one of the Hamptons Intercollegiate on Oct. 2 with a bogey-free, 8-under 64. That mark is tied for the seventh lowest 18-hole score in program history and is tied with Patrick Cantlay, Jonathan Garrick and Steve Conway for the lowest 18-hole score by a UCLA freshman.
Powell prepped at Capistrano Valley Christian Schools where he the captured both the 2023 CIF State Championship and 2023 CIF Southern Section Individual Regional title.
2022-23 In Review
UCLA recorded five top-5 team finishes in Kirakossian's first year as head coach. The season was highlighted by a t-5th mark at the highly competitive Southwestern Invitational where two Bruins – Pablo Ereño and Omar Morales – finished in the top 20.
Morales was the most impressive individual performer in Kirakossian's debut season. After finishing 89th in his first event of the season, Morales improved each tournament, culminating in the first medal of his collegiate career at the El Macero Classic.
Morales led UCLA with a 72.2 scoring average in 22 rounds and three top 20s last season. Ereño ranked second with a 72.3 average in 28 rounds, the most action by a Bruin golfer in 2022-23.
The sophomore An notched two top 20s in the his first fall season at the Folds of Honor Collegiate (t-19th, +4) and Blessings Collegiate Invitational (t-15th, +4).
Morales in the U.S. Open
Morales competed in his first major championship event this summer at the 123rd U.S. Open at hallowed Los Angeles Country Club (June 15-18). Morales, who hit the first tee shot of the tournament, sat atop the leader board at -3 after the turn in round one. Caddying for the Puebla, Mexico native was Kirakossian.
Morales earned his spot in the field by winning his qualifying round at one of the Bruins' home courses in Hillcrest Country Club with back-to-back 65s to finish -12.
Marked Improvement for Mason
Graduate student Mason Greene had his best season yet as a Bruin in 2022-23, recording a career-low 72.5 scoring average. Greene achieved his first top 20 since his freshman year in 2019-20 at the Lamkin San Diego Classic where he tied for 15th (-2). The performance marked his first under-par tournament finish since 2020.
Greene led UCLA with 10 under-par rounds and seven rounds in the 60s. The Orange Lutheran High School product set career-low single-round scores twice with a 68 and two 67s.
