October 19, 2023 | Women's Soccer
Tucson, Ariz. โ No. 2 UCLA continued its blistering offensive pace, scoring three second-half goals in a 4-1 win at Arizona on a warm Thursday evening at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium. UCLA, which outshot the Wildcats, 19-2, captured its 10th consecutive victory to improve to 13-1 overall and 7-0 in the Pac-12.
ย
The Bruins struck first, scoring an early goal in the 14th minute when forward Lexi Wright got ahead of the defense on a breakaway and fired a shot in the box. Arizona goalkeeper Hope Hisey came up to challenge and made the stop, but the rebound caromed off a Wildcat defender and into the back of the net for an own goal.
ย
UCLA nearly doubled its lead in the 34th minute when Reilyn Turner was fouled just inches outside of the box. Ally Lemos took the free kick, but it just missed wide right.
ย
Arizona (4-7-4, 1-5-1) did not miss on its one opportunity of the half. In the 39th minute, the Wildcats earned a free kick, which was sent down the field and headed by Megan Chelf to the right post. Gianna Christiansen slotted Chelf's ball past UCLA goalkeeper Neeku Purcell for the equalizer.
ย
The Bruins had two strong chances to move ahead at the end of the first half. In the 42nd minute, Wright poked a shot past Hisey towards goal, but the Wildcat defense was able to clear it out of danger. Hisey made a diving save in the 45th minute on a Sofia Cook open shot on target. ย
ย
UCLA broke the tie in the 54th minute after Turner was fouled inside the box. She stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted to give the Bruins the 2-1 lead with her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
ย
Wright, who was responsible but not credited for the game's first goal, got on the scoreboard officially in the 64th minute, taking a pass from Lemos and flying ahead of the defense. Her cross to Turner was deflected right back to her, and Wright put a spin move on her defender and then fired a left-footed shot to the far post for goal number five of her season.
