The Megans Put on a Show in Opening Night Win

February 10, 2023 | Softball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Freshman Megan Grant collected the first hits and RBI of her collegiate career to help the No. 2 UCLA softball team to a 3-0 Opening Night victory over Cal State Fullerton at Easton Stadium on Thursday evening.
ย
In the fifth inning, redshirt junior Seneca Curo knocked in the Bruins' (1-0) first run of 2023 with a base hit that fell just short of the reach of the Titans' (0-1) right fielder. Two pitches later, Grant recorded the hardest-hit ball of the night with a line-drive double that whistled over the center fielder's head to extend UCLA's lead to 2-0.
ย
Savanna Pola added an insurance run in the sixth with a double that popped out of Fullerton left fielder Bailey Wallace's mitt in a diving attempt.

Megan Faraimo took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning with two outs before allowing her lone hit. Faraimo went the distance with 13 strikeouts to earn her first shutout victory of the season. It was the 32nd double-digit strikeout outing of her career. With her performance tonight, Faraimo ties Debbie Doom (1982-85) for ninth on UCLA's all-time wins list with 73. Faraimoย is now three strikeouts shy of tying UCLA legend Lisa Fernandez with 784 career strikeouts for sixth all-time.
ย
Whenever the Titans did reach base, catcher Sharlize Palacios was there to throw them out. Fullerton did not have a baserunner until the fourth inning when Faraimo walked Alexa Neil and hit Hannah Becerra with a pitch. The next at-bat, Palacios gunned down the first of two Fullerton runners at third base to sequester any momentum.
ย
After Megan Delgadillo broke up Faraimo's no-hitter the next inning, Palacios quickly erased her from the basepaths with a dart to Anna Vines at second base.
ย
In total, eight different student-athletes made their UCLA debut tonight.
ย
The Bruins continue Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament play tomorrow when they host Cal State Bakersfield at 7 p.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium. The game will be available for listening via ucla.leanplayer.com.
