In The Pollsย ย  ย
UCLA enters the season ranked in all five major national polls, checking in as high No. 12 (Baseball America) while also appearing at No. 13 (Collegiate Baseball), No. 14 (NCBWA), No. 15 (USA TODAY Coaches Poll), and No. 17 (D1Baseball). The Bruins are the second-highest-ranked school from the West Coast in each of those polls, behind Stanford.ย

Brooks Draws Opening Day Start For Second Straight Year
For the second year in a row, righty Jake Brooks will take the ball for UCLA on Opening Day. He joins an elite list of recent Bruins who have made multiple Opening Day starts, including Gerrit Cole (2010-11), Adam Plutko (2012-13), James Kaprielian (2014-15), and Zach Pettway (2019-20). Brooks was 5-4 with a 3.96 ERA over 10 starts for UCLA in 2022. However, he had a 2.12 ERA over his first seven outings of the year. With five shutout innings against CSUN to open the 2022 season, he became the first Bruin starter to not allow a run on Opening Day since Griffin Canning in 2017.

Schrier, Tredwell Garner Preseason Publicity
UCLA's sophomore duo of shortstop Cody Schrier and weekend starter Alonzo Tredwell each received preseason recogntion from national outlets ahead of the new season. Schrier was one of 55 players selected to the Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, and was a Third Team Preseason All-America pick by Collegiate Baseball. Tredwell meanwhile garnered Preseason All-America honors from both Collegiate Baseball (Second Team) and the NCBWA (Third Team).ย

The Series Against Omaha
UCLA and Omaha have met just twice all-time, with the teams splitting those two contests. The Bruins defeated the Mavericks, 5-2, in the opening game of the 2019 Los Angeles Regional as part of the NCAA Tournament. Omaha answered back with a 9-4 midweek triumph on Feb. 23 of last season. This weekend marks the first-ever multi-game series against the two schools.ย
ย  โ€ข 5/31/19 in brief: 2019 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year Ryan Garcia pitched into the ninth inning, allowing just one earned run, to lead UCLA to a 5-2 win over Omaha in the Los Angeles Regional. UCLA trailed, 1-0, at the midway point of the game, but posted crooked numbers in back-to-back innings starting in the fifth to take the lead for good.ย
ย  ย โ€ข 2/23/22 in brief: UCLA pitchers struck out 18 batters, but Omaha scored in four of its last five offensive innings to claim a 9-4 win at JRS. Malakhi Knight drove in three runs for the Bruins, who nursed a 4-2 lead after six innings. Infielders Cam Frederick (2-4, two RBIs) and Mike Boeve (2-4, two RBIs) paced the Mavericks on offense.ย

NCAA-High Four Bruins Earn Freshman All-America Accoladesย ย  ย
UCLA had four players (Ethan Flanagan, Ethan Gourson, Cody Schrier, Alonzo Tredwell) named to Collegiate Baseball's Freshman All-America Team in 2022, more than any other program in the country. UCLA's four Frosh All-Americans were also the most in single-season program history. In addition, Schrier and Tredwell picked up national freshman honors from the NCBWA, making UCLA one of five schools to earn multiple picks from that outlet.
  • Flanagan: 3-0, 3.28 ERA, 76 Ks, 60.1 IP ... effective early as a swingman before settling into the Saturday starter role
  • Gourson: .294/.439/.455, Pac-12 co-leader in doubles (23), Pac-12 All-Tournament Team
  • Schrier: .298/.383/.492, team-high 9 home runs, solid defense at short
  • Tredwell: 2.11 ERA, 6 saves, 25 apps, 62 Ks, 47 innings ... Closed as a true freshman, had a sub-2.00 ERA most of the year
