Bruins Earn 10th Conference Win Downing Cal, 67-54

February 17, 2023 | Women's Basketball

Berkeley, Calif. – UCLA Women's Basketball improves to 21-6 (10-5 Pac-12) after defeating California (12-14, 3-12 Pac-12) Friday night in Haas Pavilion.

"It was our bigs, it was our guards, Charisma was our leading rebounder," said the Michael Price Family Head UCLA Women's Basketball Coach Cori Close. "That's a huge piece for us to get those extra possessions."

Londynn Jones led all scorers with 19 points (7-for-12 FG, 3-for-4 3FG) and was one of three Bruins in double figures. Charisma Osborne recorded her fifth double-double of the season (12 points, 10 rebounds) while swiping two steals in the effort. Emily Bessoir rounded out UCLA's double-digit scorers with 10 points of her own (5-for-11 FG).

"It means being prepared for every opportunity that you get," said Jones of her scoring effort Friday.

The Bruins outrebounded the Bears 48-28 in the win; UCLA had 20 offensive boards to Cal's eight.

UCLA had 10 steals in the victory, its third with 10+ swipes. Bessoir led the Bruins with three steals, and six UCLA players snagged one or more in the game.

Kiki Rice picked up two early fouls, and Jones checked in for the Bruins. UCLA had a 9-2 run to start the game, four of those points coming from the freshman from Riverside.

UCLA led by six after one period of play.

The Bruins opened things up in the second, outscoring Cal 22-13 in the quarter. UCLA shot 10-for-17 in the period behind an eight-point, 3-for-4 shooting performance from Jones.

Cal started the second half with two-straight buckets, forcing a timeout from Close just 46 seconds into play. Coming out of the media break, Osborne had a five-point run of her own; the senior found her way into the paint for an open layup then hit a three from the right wing.

The Golden Bears had more fight in them, outscoring the Bruins 24-23 in the third. The teams battled back and forth with short runs, but UCLA still led by 14 heading into the final period.

UCLA had its fewest made baskets in a quarter during the fourth, scoring just four of its 13 attempts in the period. Rice found her way near the baseline and hit a jumper from the short corner off an assist from Lina Sontag, giving the Bruins a game-high 16-point lead with 3:33 left on the clock.

UCLA held on to win 67-54 despite not scoring a basket after Rice's midrange shot.

UP NEXT: at Stanford (Feb. 20)

The Bruins remain in the Bay Area until Monday when they take on No. 3/3 Stanford in Maples Pavilion. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 2; tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. with Courtney Lyle and Carolyn Peck on the call.
