Bruins Double Dip in Top-10 Wins Over Florida State, Virginia Tech

CLEARWATER, Fla. โ The No. 2 UCLA softball team toppled ACC powers No. 6 Florida State and No. 8 Virginia Tech on day three of the TaxAct Clearwater Invitational on Saturday.

The Bruins' (11-0) defeated the Seminoles, 6-4, and a few hours later, ousted the Hokies, 8-4. It was UCLA's first time with two top-10 victories on the same day since April 10, 2021, when it beat No. 4 Oregon twice.

Game 1: UCLA 6, Florida State 4
UCLA broke through in the top of the sixth inning to score its first runs of the game and take a 4-2 lead over the Seminoles (8-2).

Jordan Woolery put together a quality, nine-pitch at-bat with five straight foul balls that ended in a walk to load the bases. One batter later, Kennedy Powell displayed some more freshman poise, drawing another walk to bring in the Bruins' first run of the game.

Seneca Curo, who homered earlier in the tournament versus Nebraska, hit a three-RBI double down the left field line to give UCLA the 4-2 lead.

Florida State answered in the bottom half with a full-count, two-RBI base hit from its No. 9 hitter, Josie Muffley, to tie the game.

Just as she did in the sixth inning, Savannah Pola led off the seventh with a base hit. Maya Brady then doubled to right field to put themselves into scoring position with no outs. Megan Grant strung together the Bruins' third consecutive hit with a single into right field to hit in the go-ahead runs.

Faraimo entered in relief in the second inning and struck out nine batters over 5.2 innings to earn her sixth win of the season.

Game 2: UCLA 8, Virginia Tech 4
UCLA hit around the order in a six-run first inning against Virginia Tech that featured eight base hits, including a stretch of five straight. Grant, Sharlize Palacios, Alyssa Garcia and Pola each recorded an RBI base hit in the frame.

Pola picked up two hits in the first inning alone. Across both games today, Pola was 4-for-8 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Palacios' hit her second RBI base hit of the night the next inning to answer run scored by the Hokies in the top half of the second. Virginia Tech cut the Bruins' lead to within three following a two-run home run by Jayme Bailey to left field.

Maya Brady capped her 5-for-7 day with a rocket of a home run on a 3-0 count to right field in the bottom of the fifth for her fifth longball of the season. Brady entered the week tied for first in the nation in homers.

Brooke Yanez struck out four over five innings to move to 3-0 on the year.

Faraimo shut the door with back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh. She struck out the side in the sixth and sat down two more on strikes in the seventh. With her 14 strikeouts in both games today, Faraimo passes Ally Carda (2012-15, 825 SO) for fourth on UCLA's career strikeouts list with 833. She needs 92 more strikeouts to tie Debbie Doom (1982-85) for third.MY. OH. MAYA.
