Bruins Down Sun Devils, 82-63

February 05, 2023 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ UCLA Women's Basketball (18-6, 7-5 Pac-12) defeated Arizona State (7-16, 0-12 Pac-12) on Sunday in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Bruins' 19-point win is the largest margin of victory in conference play.
ย
Charisma Osborne had a team-high 23 points for UCLA, her highest point total since the Bruins visited South Carolina (24 points, Nov. 29). Londynn Jones added 20 for her second-consecutive 20-point game, and Gabriela Jaquez scored 14 to round out Bruins in double digits.
ย
The Bruins outpaced the Sun Devils on offense in four categories; UCLA outscored ASU 16-8 off turnovers and 30-22 in the paint. The Bruins had 11 fast break points to Arizona State's 2. UCLA's bench scored 42 points; the Sun Devils' reserves only managed to score six points in Sunday's game.
ย
UCLA outrebounded the Sun Devils 39-28 in the match; Emily Bessoir had a team-high seven boards. Osborne grabbed five rebounds of her own, and five Bruins snagged an offensive board in the game.
ย
The Sun Devils jumped out in front in the first quarter, scoring the first six points of the game. Osborne went on to make two of her first three shot attempts โ€“ all three pointers โ€“ to bring the Bruins back in reach. Three freshmen (Jaquez, Jones and Rice) combined for UCLA's final seven points in the first period. The Bruins took a narrow 15-13 lead into the second quarter.
ย
UCLA outscored Arizona State 20-16 in the second, fueled by Jones and Jaquez who scored five apiece.
ย

ย
Jaquez knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the arc from an Iwuala assist with 11 seconds left on the clock. UCLA stopped the Sun Devils on their last-second shot attempts at the end of quarter two. The Bruins assisted on nine of their 11 made baskets in the first half and led 35-29 going into the break.
ย
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with each team putting together small runs throughout the period. Osborne scored six in the quarter; the shooting guard converted a transition layup through contact and hit her and-one layup four minutes into the third.
ย

ย
UCLA led by nine heading into the final period.
ย
The Bruins' offense exploded in the fourth; UCLA shot a scorching 11-for-15 from the field in the final ten minutes of play.
ย
Osborne's final made basket moved her up to 15th all time among UCLA scorers. The senior passed Dora Dome (1984-88 - 1,589 points) with a midrange jumper and sits at 1,590 career points.
