Bruins Survive First Round Overtime Battle against Arizona State, 81-70
March 01, 2023 | Women's Basketball
LAS VEGAS – UCLA Women's Basketball (23-8, 12-7 Pac-12) defeated Arizona State (8-20, 1-16 Pac-12) in overtime Wednesday afternoon in Michelob ULTRA Arena, eliminating the Sun Devils from the 2022-23 Pac-12 Women's Basketball Tournament.
Four Bruins were in double figures in the winning effort led by Emily Bessoir's 17 points. Bessoir tied her single-game career-high in three pointers made, knocking down five of her eight attempts on Wednesday. Charisma Osborne added 16 points, passing Ann Meyers for 13th all-time in UCLA's record book (1,687 career points).
Pac-12 All-Freshmen Kiki Rice and Londynn Jones rounded out Bruins in double figures, scoring 14 and 12 respectively. Rice finished with eight rebounds, six assists and only one turnover.
The Bruins shot 18-of-21 from the free throw line in the matchup – four Bruins were perfect from the charity stripe.
UCLA swiped eight steals in the game; two of Osborne's three steals came in the overtime period.
Bessoir had nine points in the first quarter on 3-for-4 shooting, sinking all three of her attempts from distance.
Brynn Masikewich added a three of her own after playing the high-low game with Gabriela Jaquez, putting the Bruins up 20-14 before the end of the first. That score held through the first ten minutes.
The Bruins got to the line nine times in the second quarter after not attempting a single free throw in the first period; UCLA converted eight of those freebie attempts. UCLA had 10 points in transition in the game, two of those came off a no-look pass from Rice to Camryn Brown as the Bruins rushed down the court.
UCLA outscored the Sun Devils 19-11 in the second, and every Bruin was on the board at halftime.
Charisma Osborne scored six-straight for the Bruins to start the second half; Gina Conti made a touch pass off a heave from Rice that landed straight in Osborne's hands. The shooting guard finished the open layup to give the Bruins an 18-point lead.
Arizona State answered back with a few runs of their own, pulling within 10 points by the end of the third. The Bruins led 56-46 heading into the final frame of regulation.
The Bruins scored just six points in the fourth quarter but held the Sun Devils to 4-of-12 shooting in those 10 minutes. Rice used Bessoir on a screen and hit a hesitation that created enough space for the point guard, and the freshman took it to the basket for the game-tying layup.
Rice was clutch on the defensive end, too; the freshman locked in with 11 seconds left on the clock. Guarding Jaddan Simmons, Rice followed the Sun Devil to the rim and blocked the last-second, potential game-ending shot as regulation finished. The teams were tied 62-62 going into overtime.
Extra time saw an explosion of offense from the Bruins; UCLA shot a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Bessoir hit two threes in the period, and Osborne scored eight without missing a shot. Osborne's clutch steal with under two minutes left led to an open layup for the guard, and it put the Bruins up five in the match. UCLA carried the momentum to an 11-point victory.
