March 15, 2023 | Men's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS – UCLA senior Jaime Jaquez Jr. has earned second-team All-America acclaim by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), as announced on Wednesday.
Jaquez Jr. has been named a second-team All-America selection this month by the Associated Press (AP), the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and Sporting News. He was honored earlier this month as the Pac-12 Player of the Year, becoming UCLA's first Pac-10 or Pac-12 Player of the Year since Kevin Love in 2008.
Jaquez Jr., a three-time All-Pac-12 Team selection, has led UCLA's team in scoring (17.3 ppg) and rebounding (8.1 rpg) this season. He has become the first Bruin to have registered at least 17 points and eight rebounds in a season since Love recorded single-season averages of 17.5 points and 10.6 rebounds as a freshman in Westwood in 2007-08.
A 6-foot-7 guard/forward from Camarillo, Calif., Jaquez Jr. was named the USBWA District IX Player on Tuesday afternoon in addition to earning All-District IX honors from the USBWA and All-District 19 acclaim from the NABC.
Jaquez Jr. has guided the Bruins' team to a 29-5 overall record. The Bruins won the Pac-12 Conference regular-season title, going 18-2 in league play, and finished ahead of Arizona (14-6) and USC (14-6) by four games. The Bruins lost to Arizona, 61-59, on Saturday, March 11, in the Pac-12 Tournament championship game in Las Vegas.
The No. 2-seed Bruins (29-5) will return to action this Thursday in the NCAA Tournament against No. 15-seed UNC Asheville (27-7). Game time at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Calif., is 7:05 p.m. (PT). UCLA's contest against UNC Asheville will be nationally televised on truTV.
