Freshmen Key Men's Tennis Win Against Oklahoma State
March 18, 2023 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ Three Bruin freshmen posted singles wins in the UCLA men's tennis team's 4-2 victory against Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
First-year player Aadarsh Tripathi prevailed in clinching fashion for the first time in his career. Classmates Gianluca Ballotta and Azuma Visaya and junior Stefan Leustian also picked up wins for the Bruins (8-4) in their non-conference finale. The Cowboys (11-6) earned the doubles point and Tyler Zink added a singles victory by way of retirement.
Alex Garcia and Francisco Pini held off Visaya and Timothy Li for a 6-4 win on Court 3, giving Oklahoma State the advantage in doubles play. Alessio Basile and Carl Roothman then closed out Tripathi and Jeffrey Fradkin on Court 2, clinching the initial point for the Cowboys by way of their 6-2 victory.
UCLA bounced back in singles play, securing five of six first sets. Oklahoma State's lone first set quickly turned into a match victory for Tyler Zink after Patrick Zahraj retired trailing 3-6, 1-3.
The Bruins' comeback began on the back courts, where Leustian registered his second win of the week. The 6-4, 6-4 result on Court 6 came opposite Basile. Court 5 finished next, as Ballotta defeated Pini 7-5, 6-2. Ballotta has won five of six singles decisions in dual-match competition
The remaining matches went three sets, with Court 4 coming to a verdict next. Visaya gave UCLA its first lead of the day, outlasting Garcia by a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 margin and shifting focus to the stadium courts.
With Giacomo Revelli of the Bruins locked in a three-set showdown with No. 108 Isaac Becroft on Court 2, Tripathi provided the heroics on Court 3. Serving to even the game score at five games apiece, Ferguson double faulted to give Tripathi the 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
The Bruins will have nearly two weeks off to prepare for the start of Pac-12 play, starting Friday, March 31 at No. 15 Arizona. First serve from LaNelle Robson Tennis Center is set for 2 p.m. PT. A visit to Arizona State's Whiteman Tennis Center completes the trip Sunday, April 2 at 12 p.m.
