March 18, 2023 | Gymnastics

West Valley City, Utah – Fourth-ranked UCLA fought back from an early deficit, jumping from fourth to second place at the Pac-12 Championships, just .075 behind first-place Utah. The Bruins climbed the standings after each rotation but came up just shy in the final round despite a 49.600 on floor.

Sophomore Jordan Chiles won two events, taking first place on uneven bars with a 9.975 and tying for first with fellow Olympian Jade Carey on floor exercise with a 9.975. Freshman Selena Harris finished third in the all-around with a score of 39.625, and placed second on bars and third on beam with scores of 9.950.

The Bruins had a slow start on vault, scoring just 49.175 in the first rotation. Chae Campbell and Jordan Chiles provided a pair of 9.9s to lead the way, but the Bruins could only get two other 9.8s, from Emily Lee and Selena Harris. Oregon State took the early lead with a 49.500 on balance beam, led by Jade Carey's 9.975. California was close behind in second with a 49.475 on floor exercise, thanks to a pair of 9.95s to close the rotation. Utah scored 49.375 on uneven bars.

The Bruins bounced back in a big way on uneven bars, however, scoring 49.575. Campbell got the Bruins off to a great start with a season-high 9.875. After Ana Padurariu's 9.900, Harris hit for a 9.950. Margzetta Frazier added a 9.875, and Chiles closed the rotation with a near-perfect 9.975, her fifth 9.975 of the season on the event. UCLA's bars score helped close the gap to .250 from first-place Oregon State (99.000) and .150 from second-place Utah (98.900), who scored 49.525 on beam to move up one. UCLA and Cal finished the second rotation tied for third with scores of 98.750. UCLA made another move in the third rotation, scoring 49.500 on balance beam to pass both Cal and Oregon State. Lee started out with a superb leadoff routine that scored 9.925, her sixth 9.9+ leadoff score on beam. Ciena Alipio and Padurariu followed with a pair of 9.85s. In the four spot, Chiles suffered her first fall of the season, but her teammates were there to pick her up, as Harris posted a career-high-tying 9.950, her fifth 9.950 of the season, and Emma Malabuyo closed it out with a savvy 9.925 routine. The Bruins ended the rotation with a three-event score of 148.250, behind only Utah, whose 49.600 on floor moved them into first place with a 148.500. California was a tick behind the Bruins in third place with a 148.200, and Oregon State dropped to fourth with a 148.125 after scoring 49.125 on vault. The Bruins did all they could in the final rotation with a sensational floor exercise rotation that scored 49.600. Lee led off with a 9.875, followed by a 9.9 from Malabuyo. Harris continued her outstanding meet with a career-high-tying 9.925. Frazier put on a show and scored 9.900. Campbell hit huge tumbling, including a stuck double back final pass and received a 9.900. Chiles needed a 9.975 for the Bruins to finish ahead of California and scored just that, receiving a pair of 10s from the four judges. Utah, however, was able to hold onto the lead with a strong showing on vault. The Utes scored 49.425 on vault, .150 higher than any other team in the meet. UCLA will next compete at the NCAA Regionals, which will be held Mar. 29-April 1 in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Regional field will be announced on Monday, Mar. 20 at 9am PT at ncaa.com.
