UCLA Hosts Tulane, Sac State, USC in Southern California College Baseball Classicย ย ย
UCLA continues a five-game homestand this week, hosting a trio of teams (Tulane, Sacramento State, USC) in the 2023 Southern California College Baseball Classic. USC will host Sac State and Tulane on Friday and Saturday, respectively, and Sac State and Tulane will then play a neutral game at Jackie Robinson Stadium at 10:00 a.m. PT before the Bruins and Trojans face off. UCLA owns a 5-2 record all-time against Tulane, but hasn't faced the Green Wave in over 20 years (last meeting: Mar. 1, 2003 at the Kia Baseball Bash, hosted by Cal State Fullerton). UCLA and Tulane faced off in three consecutive seasons from 2001-03, with the Bruins going 4-1 over those games. This is just the second-ever meeting between the two schools at Jackie Robinson Stadium, with UCLA taking an 8-3 midweek decision on Feb. 23, 2001.ย
The Series Against Sacramento Stateย ย ย
UCLA is 8-2 all-time against Sac State, including a 5-1 mark under current head coach John Savage. The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA is 2-2 over the last week, dropping two-of-three on the road at No. 5 Vanderbilt before recovering to beat Michigan:
- The Bruins were blanked, 6-0, in Friday's series opener in Nashville. The Bruins allowed a run in just two frames, as Vandy did most of its damage with a five-run fourth. All five of the Commodores' runs during that rally came with two outs. UCLA tried to rally late, getting two aboard in both the seventh and eighth innings, but couldn't get on the board.
- UCLA returned the favor with a 3-0 shutout win on Saturday to even the series. The Bruins hit a trio of solo homers in the late innings to go ahead. Duce Gourson broke the deadlock with a solo homer to left off a change-up in the seventh, and Darius Perry followed by smacking a hanging slider over the high wall in left for back-to-back homers. Kyle Karros added a solo shot in the ninth. Alonzo Tredwell led a five-hit shutout, recovering from a tightrope first inning to deliver five innings of two-hit ball. He struck out seven. Cody Delvecchio picked up his first-career win as he, Charles Harison, and Luke Jewett turned in four innings of shutout relief, collectively.
- The Bruins were edged 2-1 in a razor-tight Sunday rubber match. A two-run homer in the second proved to be the difference in the game, as UCLA could never get back even. Kelly Austin was outstanding besides the two-run shot, going 1-2-3 to start the game and retiring the final 10 batters he faced. He allowed just three hits over six innings. Kyle Karros doubled and scored on a Darius Perry RBI single in the sixth to account for the Bruins' run, but Vandy's Nick Maldonado shut the door with a three-inning save, including eight strikeouts and just one hit against.ย
- UCLA built a big lead early, and took a one-hitter into the eighth inning in an eventual 9-4 win over Michigan on Wednesday at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Kyle Karros hit a solo homer and scored four runs to pace the Bruin offense. UCLA never trailed, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and building a 7-0 lead by the end of the fourth. Michigan scored all of its run with a four-run eighth. Michael Barnett drew the start and posted three shutout innings. Finn McIlroy (4th) and Charles Harrison (9th) struck out the side in order to highlight the performance from the 'pen.ย
- The Bruins were scheduled to play five games this week, but had a Tuesday game against LMU postponed due to inclement weather.ย
