No. 2 UCLA Plays Five at Judi Garman Classic

LOS ANGELES โ The No. 2 UCLA softball team closes out its tournament schedule with five games at the Judi Garman Classic at Anderson Family Field in Fullerton, Calif., this week from March 3-5. The Bruins (17-1) open with two games versus UCF and Fresno State on Friday.

UCLA's game against Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m. (PT) will be the only game available for livestreaming on ESPN+.

Recapping the Mary Nutter
UCLA went 5-1 in Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic play in Cathedral City, Calif., last week. The Bruins defeated three top-25 foes in No. 3 Florida, No. 18 Kentucky and No. 19 Northwestern before suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of No. 2 Oklahoma last Sunday. UCLA was also victorious against Iowa and Texas A&M.

Last Year at the Judi Garman Classic
UCLA swept its competition at the 2022 rendition of the Judi Garman Classic, going 5-0 and outscoring its opponents 48-4. Megan Faraimo tossed a perfect game against Fresno State last time out at the event on March 3, 2022.

Faraimo Throws Another No-No
Megan Faraimo no-hit No. 3 Florida on Feb. 23 in a 10-0 mercy-rule victory for her seventh career no-hitter. Faraimo's no-hitter marked the first time a Bruin pitcher no-hit a top-3 opponent since March 28, 2003, when Keira Goerl kept No. 2 Stanford out of the hit column. It was Faraimo's first no-no against a ranked opponent. Faraimo opened the game by striking out six of the first seven batters she faced. She finished the game with nine strikeouts. The Gators' (10-1) only baserunner was a walk to leadoff the second inning. ย

Faraimo, who no-hit San Diego earlier this season, is up to seven solo no-hitters which are tied for fourth most all-time with Debbie Doom (1982-85).

Maya Brady Leading the Way
Redshirt junior Maya Brady's 28 hits on the season lead the Bruins and rank second in the country. Brady, who earned her first NFCA National Player of the Week Award after the first week of the season, also paces the Bruins with a .528 batting average, 21 runs scored, five home runs and 11 extra-base hits.

Freshman Slugging Duo
Jordan Woolery and Megan Grant have situated themselves into the heart of the Bruins' lineup through the first three weeks of the season. Grant leads the team and all freshmen in the country in runs batted in with 21. Woolery, who has started at first base in every game this season, is right behind Grant with 17 RBI. Woolery's .435 batting average is second-best on the squad.

Megan Faraimo was named Softball America's Pitcher of the Month after leading the nation with nine wins and 91 strikeouts in the month of February.

Brady Cracks the Top 50
Brady's seven hits at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic moved her into No. 50 on UCLA's all-time career hits list with 159. She needs 41 more hits to become the 35th player in UCLA history to record 200 in a career.

Faraimo's 859 career strikeouts rank fourth all-time in UCLA history. She needs 93 more to crack UCLA's top-3 and tie Debbie Doom.

Five UCLA players were named to the 2023 Preseason All-Pac-12 Team on Feb. 1: Maya Brady, Megan Faraimo, Aaliyah Jordan, Sharlize Palacios and Brooke Yanez. UCLA paced the conference with five of the 19 named to the team with the next-closest school being Washington with four selections.ย

UCLA's roster totes three of the last four Pac-12 Batting Champions in Aaliyah Jordan (2018), Kelli Godin (2019) and Janelle Meoño (2021). All three players won the award as freshmen. Jordan won the title with a .429 batting average (84 hits), Godin with a .418 average (56 hits) and Meoño with a .439 average (72 hits). Jordan's 84 hits in 2018 rank t-8th for a single season in UCLA history.
