Selena Harris Named Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of Year

March 21, 2023 | Gymnastics

UCLA freshman Selena Harris was named the 2023 Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year, as voted upon by the conference coaches. Harris is the 10th Bruin to earn the honor.

Harris has been not only the top freshman in the conference but one of the top gymnasts in the nation, ranking in the Top 7 in the all-around every week of the season, including two weeks at No. 3. She finished the regular season ranked No. 6 nationally and No. 3 in the Pac-12 behind only a pair of Olympians. She earned Top 3 finishes in the all-around and on uneven bars and balance beam at last weekend's Pac-12 Championships.

The Las Vegas native has competed 43 out of 44 possible routines this season and hit every single routine, averaging over 9.9 on bars, beam and floor and just a hair under 9.9 at 9.873 on vault. Her season average in the all-around is 39.648, and she has scored 39.500 or higher in all 10 all-around attempts. She has totaled 33 scores of 9.9 or higher and 11 scores of 9.95 or higher, including a 9.975 on vault and one on bars. Harris has 10 individual victories this season - four on beam and two each in the all-around, vault and bars. She was named Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Week a Pac-12 record-tying six times this season and tied the conference record by winning the award in five consecutive weeks.

Harris was also the only Bruin and one of only two gymnasts in the conference to earn first-team All-Pac-12 honors on all four events and the all-around. Joining her on the all-conference team are sophomore Jordan Chiles, who earned first-team honors in the all-around, vault, bars and floor and honorable mention acclaim on beam; and Chae Campbell, who earned first-team honors on vault and floor. Chiles is now an eight-time All-Pac-12 selection, while Campbell becomes a six-time All-Pac-12 honoree. The Bruins' 12 all-conference honors are the most by a UCLA team since the 2020 squad also totaled 12. Harris and Chiles become the first Pac-12 teammates to earn the maximum five all-conference honors in the same year.
