The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA is 4-0 over the last week, going unbeaten in the Southern California College Baseball Classic last weekend before recording a midweek win over Long Beach State on Tuesday:
UCLA entered the week ranked in every major national poll, checking in as high as No. 10 (Collegiate Baseball) while also appearing at No. 12 (USA TODAY Coaches Poll, NCBWA), No. 13 (Baseball America), and No. 16 (D1Baseball).
The Series Against Oregonย ย ย
UCLA owns a 35-16 record all-time against Oregon, including a 24-14 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins have won five of the last six sets against the Ducks, including a sweep in last year's meeting at Jackie Robinson Stadium. ย Oregon won two of three the last time UCLA was in Eugene, a series which featured a pair of extra-inning, one-run games. In fact, almost every game UCLA and Oregon has played in recent years has been close. Of the eight games in the head-to-head series since 2019, all eight have been decided by two runs or fewer, and six have been decided by one run.ย
Last Year Against the Ducksย ย ย
UCLA swept a three-game series against Oregon at home last year (Apr. 1-3), winning each game by one run:
Through three-plus weeks of regular season play, UCLA ranks near the top nationally in a number of statistics on both sides of the ball:
So far this season, UCLA has ranked among the best in nation in drawing walks on the offensive end while limiting free passes on the mound. The Bruins have a plus-53 walk differential this season (77 drawn, 24 issued), good for sixth in the country. UCLA is one of just two schools in the country with 75+ walks drawn and under 25 walks issued (Wofford).
Digging the Long Ballย ย ย
UCLA has hit 16 home runs so far this season over 12 games, while allowing just seven. The Bruins are a spotless 9-0 this year when hitting at least one HR. Junior JonJon Vaughns leads UCLA with four home runs, while Kyle Karros, Duce Gourson, and Cody Schrier all have three. The Bruins have hit a home run in a season-high five straight games, the program's longest streak since May 21-29, 2021 (six games).
Strong Startersย ย ย
UCLA has consistently drawn first blood against its opponents, scoring first in nine of 12 games so far this season (going 9-0 in those contests). The Bruins have yet to allow a run in the first inning this year, and are outscoring the opposition 31-5 over the first three innings of games (including a 16-0 advantage in the first inning).
Friendly Confinesย ย ย
The Bruins are an undefeated 9-0 in home games at Jackie Robinson Stadium so far this season. Only five teams in the country have a better home record than the Bruins entering the weekend. UCLA has widely outperformed its opposition at JRS, slashing a collective .321/.459/.510 (compared to .208/.254/.327 for opponents) while posting a plus-70 run differential (92-22). On the pitching side, the Bruins have a 1.44 team ERA at Jackie (opponents: 10.00) with a 108-69 advantage in strikeouts.ย
Plenty of Delvecchio, Harrisonย ย ย
UCLA right-handed relievers Cody Delvecchio (nine appearances) and Charles Harrison (eight) enter the weekend with the most appearances of any pitchers in the Pac-12 Conference. Delvecchio ranks third nationally in the stat, and oddly is the only pitcher in the country with exactly nine appearances as of Thursday. No other NCAA school has multiple pitchers with 8+ outings.ย

The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA is 4-0 over the last week, going unbeaten in the Southern California College Baseball Classic last weekend before recording a midweek win over Long Beach State on Tuesday:
- Cody Schrier hit a pair of home runs to lead UCLA to a 10-3 win over Tulane on Friday. He led off the bottom of the first with a solo shot, and then blasted a three-run homer in the fifth that put the Bruins ahead for good. UCLA tacked on insurance with a three-spot in the eighth. Jake Brooks allowed just four hits over six innings to pick up the win.ย
- Alonzo Tredwell went six strong and Duce Gourson went 3-4 with two RBIs โ including a solo home run โ as UCLA edged Sacramento State, 3-2, on Saturday. The Hornets drew first blood via a two-run Jeffery Heard homer in the fourth, but Gourson responded with a solo shot in the bottom half of the inning before tying it up with an RBI single in the fifth. Kyle Karros followed with an RBI single of his own later in the inning to drive in the go-ahead and game-winning run. Michael Barnett (1.2 IP) and Luke Jewett (1.1 IP, SV) shut down Sac State the rest of the way.
- UCLA finished off the unbeaten run through the SoCal Classic by defeating USC on Sunday, 5-3. The Bruins never trailed in the contest, as JonJon Vaughns hit a two-run homer in the second to put the Bruins up for good. USC didn't get on the board until the sixth inning, and UCLA immediately responded in the bottom half of that inning to make it 5-1. The Trojans made it a two-run game in the ninth off a Nate Clow homer, but that was as close as they would get. Kelly Austin pitched out of trouble to get through 4 1/3 innings without allowing a run. UCLA limited USC to a 1-10 line with runners in scoring position.
- Jack Holman had a career-high five RBIs to lead UCLA to a 7-6 win over Long Beach State on Tuesday. He hit a three-run homer as part of a first-inning four spot, and drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the eighth that closed the scoring. LBSU clawed back from down 5-1 to tie the game in the eighth, but the deadlock was short-lived as Holman put the Bruins back ahead in the bottom half. Kyle Karros also had three hits for the Bruins, Carson Yates hit a ball off the batter's eye (which was ruled a triple), and grad transfer Knox Loposer notched his first as a Bruin.
- Over the last week, UCLA is outscoring its opponents 25-14, outhitting them .307 to .221, and holds a 2.25 to 5.91 advantage in team ERA.
UCLA entered the week ranked in every major national poll, checking in as high as No. 10 (Collegiate Baseball) while also appearing at No. 12 (USA TODAY Coaches Poll, NCBWA), No. 13 (Baseball America), and No. 16 (D1Baseball).

Last Year Against the Ducksย ย ย
UCLA swept a three-game series against Oregon at home last year (Apr. 1-3), winning each game by one run:
- Game 1 โ Jake Brooks pitched into the ninth inning for the first time in his career and JonJon Vaughns hit a game-tying two-run home run to lead UCLA to a 3-2 win over Oregon on Friday. Vaughns's blast tied it up at 2-2 in the sixth, but the Bruins continued to rally as Jake Palmer doubled and later scored on a Kenny Oyama base hit for the go-ahead run. All three runs came with two outs. Brooks needed just 86 pitches to complete eight-plus innings, facing the minimum in four frames. Gage Jump entered the game with the tying run on second and nobody out in the ninth, but stranded that runner to record his first-career save.
- Game 2 โ Eight of nine starters collected a hit and all nine reached at least once as UCLA clinched the series with a 4-3 Saturday win. Tommy Beres sparked a pair pair of run-scoring rallies as part of his first-career multi-hit day. Oregon made it interesting late, scoring a run in the ninth to make it a one-run game, but Kelly Austin got the final out to record his first collegiate save. Max Rajcic allowed just two earned over a career-high six innings to pick up the win.
- Game 3 โ UCLA finished off the sweep with a 5-4 Sunday win. Oregon plated a single run in each of the first four innings, but the Bruins battled back to tie it on an RBI double from Malakhi Knight in the sixth, and Kyle Karros put UCLA up for good with a go-ahead solo home run in the seventh. Jake Saum (4 IP, 1 H, 4 K) and Gage Jump (2 IP, 0 H) closed out the final six innings of the game without allowing a run. Catcher Darius Perry hit his first collegiate home run and threw out a pair of runners in arguably his strongest performance as a Bruin to that point.ย
- UCLA Takes National Lead in Team ERAย ย ย
- After allowing just six earned runs over four games last week, UCLA took over the NCAA lead in team ERA. The Bruins enter the weekend with a combined mark of 1.78, one of just two schools (Wake Forest: 1.98) with an ERA under 2.00. UCLA's 21 earned runs against are second-fewest in the country, trailing only Massachusetts (who has only played three games this year). The Bruins have allowed two earned runs or fewer in 10 of 12 games so far this season, including five contests with either one or none against. Of the 15 pitchers used by UCLA this season, 11 have an ERA of 1.50 or lower.
Through three-plus weeks of regular season play, UCLA ranks near the top nationally in a number of statistics on both sides of the ball:
- ERA โ 1st (1.78)
- K-BB Ratio โ 4th (5.67)
- BB/9 โ 4th (2.04)
- WHIP โ 7th (0.99)
- H/9 โ 17th (6.88)
- K/9 โ 19th (11.5)
- Walks Drawn โ 26th (77)
- OBP โ 47th (.420)
