No. 24 Women’s Golf to Tee it Up at Pac-12 Championships

LOS ANGELES – The No. 24 UCLA women's golf team opens postseason play at the Pac-12 Women's Golf Championships set to take place from Monday, April 17 through Wednesday, April 19 at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix, Ariz.
 
The three-day, 54-hole stroke play competition will play a par 72 with a course yardage of 6,563 and feature the 11 Pac-12 Conference teams that sponsor women's golf.
 
Daily highlights from each round will be aired on the Pac-12 Network. Fans can follow along with this live scoring link.

The Field
Five of the Pac-12 teams at this year's event are ranked in the top-25 of the latest Golfweek poll released this Thursday. Leading the way is No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 Oregon in the top-10 as well as No. 11 Arizona State (course host), No. 15 USC and No. 24 UCLA.
 
Stanford's Rose Zhang is the No. 1-ranked women's golfer in the country. Campos, who is coming off back-to-back wins to close the regular season, is the second highest-ranked golfer competing in the field at No. 11.
 
Canales is the Bruins' second highest-ranked golfer at No. 58.
 
UCLA at the Pac-12 Championships
UCLA has won seven Pac-10/12 conference titles, five of which coming with head coach Carrie Forsyth at the helm of the program. Forsyth's last conference championship was four seasons ago (excluding the COVID-19 pandemic-shortened season) in 2018 at Broadmoor Golf Club.

This will mark the first year that Arizona State has hosted the Pac-12 Championships at Papago Golf Course and the first year it has held the event since it closed the Sun Devils' former home, Karsten Golf Course. Karsten played home to the 2011, 2001 and 1991 championships.
 
The Bruins have performed well at the last three Pac-12 Championships held in Arizona with two first-place finishes in 2017 and 2006 in Tucson and a 3rd-place mark at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe in 2011.
 
Last Year at the Pac-12 Championships
UCLA placed fourth (+17, 296-289-296) in the rainy and wintery conditions at the 2022 Pac-12 Championships at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore. Then-freshman Alessia Nobilio led the Bruins' lineup, tying for third place at 1-over (72-72-73) in the first postseason tournament of her career.
 
Nobilio, who picked up her fourth top-5 finish of the season, shot a 1-over 73 in the final round with a pair of birdies on both the front and back nine.
 
Canales was the only other Bruin who is in UCLA's 2023 starting five who also competed at last year's event. She tied 19th in the tournament with a score of 6-over (72-75-75).
 
Campos Named Back-to-Back Pac-12 Women's Golfer of the Week
UCLA sophomore Zoe Antoinette Campos was named Pac-12 Women's Golfer of the Week for the second week in a row on Tuesday this week. Campos has now secured two weekly Pac-12 honors in her career.
 
The Valencia, Calif. native won her second medal in back-to-back tournaments at the Silverado Showdown at Silverado Resort last Wednesday, April 5, with a score of 5-under (67-73-71). Campos finished three strokes ahead of Dianna Lee (Northwestern), Hailee Cooper (Texas A&M) and Catherine Park (Oregon), who finished in a three-way tie for runner-up.
 
She is the first Bruin since 2018-19 to win multiple medals in a single season since 2018-19 when UCLA's trio of Patty Tavatanakit (three wins), Mariel Galdiano (two wins) and Beth Wu (two wins) achieved the feat.
 
Campos pulled ahead in round three of the Silverado Showdown just before the turn onto the back nine when she birdied the par-4 eighth and par-5 ninth holes to take a two-stroke lead over Texas A&M's Cooper.
 
Midseason Recognition for Campos
Campos was among the to the top 25 golfers listed in the first April Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings for the 2023 matches that was released on Thursday. Campos came in at No. 4 on the list.
 
The top six golfers from the spring's final ranking from both the United States and International men and women shall be among the individuals selected to compete in the Palmer Cup.
 
In March, Campos was one of 15 women's golfers to be named to the ANNIKA Award Watch List. The honor is given annually to the top women's golfer in the country.
 
Bruins at a Glance
Campos leads UCLA with a 71.6 scoring average in her nine tournaments (22 rounds) this season. She is tied with Caroline Canales for six top-10 finishes in 2023. Campos has finished outside the top-20 only once this season, coming in a t-21st mark this season at the Vystar Credit Union Gator Invitational.
 
Campos has shot under par in five of her last six rounds for a total of 17-under and a 69.2 scoring average.
 
Canales ranks second on the team with a 72.8 scoring average. Her and Alessia Nobilio are the only Bruins to compete in every tournament this season.
 
Last Time Out
In addition to Campos claiming her second career medal, UCLA finished in third place out of 17 teams at the Silverado Showdown with a score of 18-over (294-296-292). The Bruins finished ahead of nine Pac-12 teams that competed at the event.
 
Canales had an impressive day three, shooting a 2-under 70 to jump 16 spots on the leaderboard to seventh place and finish 3-over for the tournament (75-75-70).
 
Nobilio tied for 35th at 12-over (75-79-74), Yuki Yoshihara tied for 46th at 14-over (77-73-80) and Annabel Wilson tied for 66th at 17-over (80-76-77).
