Brady, Grant Bring in Pac-12 Weekly Honors Again
April 17, 2023 | Softball
SAN FRANCISCO – Utilities Maya Brady and Megan Grant on the No. 2 UCLA softball team were named the Pac-12 Player of the Week and Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. This marks the second time this season they have each received those awards.
The two sluggers pounded out a combined five home runs in the Bruins' second consecutive season series sweep of rival Arizona last weekend. UCLA (39-4, 15-3) has now hauled in 11 Pac-12 weekly awards this year to lead the conference.
Maya Brady is the seventh Bruin in program history to collect four Pac-12 Player of the Week awards in a career (Stacey Nuveman - 9; Lisa Fernandez - 6; GiOnna DiSalvatore - 4; Rachel Garcia - 4; Stephany LaRosa - 4; Natasha Watley - 4).
Brady homered in all three games against the Wildcats and led the team with seven RBI in its third consecutive Pac-12 series sweep. Brady has now homered in four straight games, becoming the first Bruin to accomplish that feat since B.B. Bates left the yard in five straight games in February 2013.
The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native brought in the first three runs of UCLA's comeback win in game two versus Arizona on a sacrifice fly and a two-run homer, cutting the deficit to just one at 4-3.
Each of her homers in the series came with runners on base. With help from Brady, UCLA has hit multiple home runs in each of its last six games for a grand total of 16 in that span. In 10 career games against Arizona, Brady is batting for a .517 average (15-for-29) and 1.310 slugging percentage with six home runs, five doubles and 12 RBI.
Brady is the conference leader in batting average (.448), home runs (15) and slugging percentage and is in the hunt for the Pac-12 Triple Crown, ranking second in RBI (48).
Grant recorded the first multi-homer game and first grand slam of her career in game three against Arizona to match a season-high five RBI that was set just last week against Oregon State.
Grant's grand slam was a rocket that cleared Hillenbrand Stadium's center field batter's eye. By picking up a hit in each of her three games this weekend, Grant stretches her hitting streak to 14 games which is the longest by a UCLA freshman since Briana Perez's 21-game hitting streak in 2018.
Grant also recorded a clutch double in game two to help kickstart the Bruins' comeback by advancing a runner to third base which would eventually come around to score on Brady's sacrifice fly.
The San Bruno, Calif. native leads all Pac-12 freshmen with 10 home runs and 47 runs batted in.
Brady, Grant and the Bruins are back in action Wednesday, April 19 at Long Beach State for a 6 p.m. (PT) contest. The Bruins will host Arizona State for their next Pac-12 series from April 21-23 at Easton Stadium.
