PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 12-ranked UCLA baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Washington State at Bailey-Brayton Field on Sunday afternoon.
The contest was the second and final game in the series between UCLA (16-8, 6-5 Pac-12) and WSU (17-9, 5-6) after Saturday's game was called off due to snow. The start of Sunday's game was delayed about 90 minutes from the scheduled 12:00 p.m. PT start, also due to snow.
The Cougars never trailed on Sunday, scoring the first five runs of the game.
The hosts scored in three consecutive frames starting in the third, opening the scoring with a decisive two-spot. Will Cresswell opened the third with a solo home run to get WSU on the board, and Cam Magee later drove in the game-winning run with an RBI base hit up the middle.
Washington State would go on to tack on three more runs on a Jonah Advincula solo homer and a twor-un RBI single from Sam Brown.
Sophomore shortstop Cody Schrier got UCLA into the run column in the sixth, teeing off on a 3-2 offering for a solo home run to left. It was Schrier's fourth roundtripper of the season.
UCLA relievers Cody Delvecchio and Charles Harrison combined to retire the final eight batters of the game in order.
Delvecchio entered with one on and one out in the sixth, and promptly induced back-to-back balls in the air to get out of that inning. He then followed up with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Each of the five outs he recorded came on flyouts or popouts.
Harrison then finished up the game with a three-up, three-down down eighth inning.
UCLA sophomore righty Alonzo Tredwell drew the start after missing the Washington series, striking out four while allowing three earned runs on six hits over four innings.
The Bruins conclude their current road swing on Tuesday night with a 6:00 p.m. non-conference game at Long Beach State.
