The Week In Review
UCLA is coming off an 0-3 week, dropping a midweek to Cal State Fullerton and two league games at Washington State:
  • Cal State Fullerton posted three crooked numbers early, ultimately recording a 15-5 win over UCLA on Tuesday. The Bruins received notable offensive performances from Knox Loposer (2-4, two doubles), Malakhi Knight (2-4, double, two RBIs), and Jack Holman (solo homer).
  • Washington State logged a 9-5 win in Friday night's series-opener. Bruin relievers retired 12 consecutive Cougars to close the game, but that wasn't enough to overcome a pair of early multi-run rallies from the hosts, who led 9-3 through four. Darius Perry paced the Bruins offensively with a home run and a double. Jake Saum, Cody Delvecchio, and Chris Aldrich teamed up for that 12-up, 12-down spree in the second half of the game.
  • WSU closed out the series with a 5-1 win on Sunday. Again, UCLA sent down eight batters in a row to close the game but couldn't overcome an early deficit, as the Cougars scored in three consecutive frames starting in the third to build a 5-0 lead. Cody Schrier got UCLA on the board with a solo shot in the sixth.
  • The series in Pullman was affected by weather. UCLA-WSU had a scheduled Saturday game postponed, and ultimately not made up, due to snow. The start of Sunday's game was also delayed about 90 minutes due to snow flurries at Bailey-Brayton Field.
In The Polls
UCLA entered the week ranked in three of the five major national polls, checking in as high as No. 22 (USA TODAY Coaches Poll) while also appearing at No. 23 (D1Baseball, NCBWA). The Bruins were unranked in the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls. Long Beach State enters the contest unranked, though the Dirtbags did receive votes in this week's NCBWA poll.

The Series Against Long Beach State
UCLA owns a 69-47 record all-time against LBSU, including a 20-16 mark under head coach John Savage.  In most recent seasons, UCLA and Long Beach State have played a home-and-home midweek series; here is UCLA's record against LBSU in recent years: 2023 (1-0), 2022 (1-1), 2019 (2-0), 2018 (0-2), 2017 (2-0), 2016 (1-1), 2015 (1-1). The two squads last met in a weekend series in 2014, with the Dirtbags taking two-of-three in the split-venue set (Friday/Sunday games at UCLA, Saturday game at LBSU).

Last Time Out Against LBSU
Jack Holman had a career-high five RBIs to lead UCLA to a 7-6 win over Long Beach State on Mar. 7. He hit a three-run homer as part of a first-inning four spot, and drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the eighth that closed the scoring. LBSU clawed back from down 5-1 to tie the game in the eighth, but the deadlock was short-lived as Holman put the Bruins back ahead in the bottom half. Kyle Karros also had three hits for the Bruins, Carson Yates hit a ball off the batter's eye (which was ruled a triple), and grad transfer Knox Loposer notched his first as a Bruin.

Last Year Against LBSU
The Bruins split a pair of midweeks against Long Beach State last year, shutting out the Dirtbags at home before suffering a walk-off loss in Long Beach.
  • Mar. 1, 2022 at UCLA in brief: Cody Schrier hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first, and the Bruins threw a combined two-hitter to defeat LBSU, 3-0. UCLA struck out a season-high 19 batters in that contest, tied for the most in a single game for the program over the last 11 years. Ethan Flanagan went 12-up, 12-down with seven strikeouts to earn his first-career save.
  • May 3, 2022 at LBSU in brief: Peyton Schulze hit a solo home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the 12th to give LBSU a 4-3 walk-off win over UCLA. The Bruins led 3-0 midway through the game, but LBSU ultimately tied it up in the seventh. Cody Schrier and Darius Perry each had solo homers for the Bruins. Ethan Flanagan (four batters faced, four strikeouts) and Alonzo Tredwell (0 H over 3.1 IP) were the standouts on the mound for UCLA.
