UCLA Flashes Leather in 3-0 Shutout of Utah, Claims Pac-12 Regular Season Title
April 28, 2023 | Softball
SALT LAKE CITY โ Redshirt senior Megan Faraimo allowed just three hits in her seventh shutout of the season to lead the No. 2 UCLA softball team in a 3-0 blanking of No. 23 Utah at Dumke Family Stadium Friday night.
ย
With the win, the Bruins (45-4, 19-3) clinch the Pac-12 regular season title outright for their 17th conference banner in program history and 12th as a member of the Pac-12. UCLA will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming inaugural Pac-12 Softball Tournament.
ย
Faraimo relied upon UCLA's stellar defense, striking out just one batter on the night. It was the first time in the two-time NFCA All-American's career that she had only one strikeout in a 5.0-plus inning outing.
ย
Center fielder Janelle Meoño put her range on full display in the first inning, sprinting roughly 45 feet to track down a ball on the run near the warning track in left-center for the third out.
ย
The Bruins flashed the leather again in the second to bail out Faraimo after allowing a lead-off walk. Shortstop Maya Brady ended the inning with a diving stop on a sharply-hit ball up the middle. Brady slapped second base with her mitt while laying outstretched on the ground.
ย
The next half inning, Brady put the Bruins on the board with a two-run shot to center field for her team-leading 16th home run and 55th RBI of the season. She ranks second in the Pac-12 in both categories while leading the conference with a .454 batting average.
ย
UCLA's defense recorded five total force outs at second base in the game, including two in the fifth inning, to put a halt to any Utes (31-11, 12-7) rally.
ย
Sophomore Savannah Pola added a crucial insurance run in the sixth with a double to center field to score Jordan Woolery who singled earlier in the inning.
ย
Brady made the highlight reel again in the bottom of the sixth. The five-tool shortstop chased after a ballย tailing into left field foul territory and snagged it over the shoulder in a Willie-Mays-esque, basket catch.
ย
UCLA looks to secure its eighth Pac-12 series victory tomorrow in game two at 1 p.m. (PT). The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Krista Blunk on the call.

Nine of Faraimo's 21 outs came on groundballs. She ended the game with back-to-back slow rollers to Woolery at first baseman to open the seventh. Faraimo stretches her national lead in wins to 25 and is now three wins away from 100 in her career. She's got all five tools ????
