No. 2 Bruins Mercy-Rule Utah to Secure Eighth Pac-12 Series Win

SALT LAKE CITY โ Savannah Pola, Kennedy Powell and Alyssa Garcia on the No. 2 UCLA softball team each recorded three RBI apiece in a 10-1 mercy-rule victory over No. 23 Utah at Dumke Family Stadium Saturday afternoon.

For just the second time in the last 20 years, the Bruins (46-4, 20-3) have taken the season series against all eight Pac-12 opponents (2021). It was the first time this season the Utes (31-12, 12-8) had been mercy-ruled.

Left-handed pitcher Brooke Yanez was dominant in the circle, allowing just three hits and one run in her 14th win of the season. She needed just three pitches in a three-up, three down third inning.

Pola belted her first home run of the season on a two-run shot to right-center field in the fifth inning to stretch UCLA's lead to 7-1. The sophomore second baseman also singled in a run in the third inning.

Powell made the most of her start in left field, going 3-for-4 at the plate and a home run shy of the cycle. She split the gap in her first plate appearance in the third inning with a double to score two runs. The catcher Garcia dug into the box next and capped the four-run frame with another two-out RBI base hit to score Powell who beat the tag thanks to a head-first slide into home.

Powell and Garcia teamed up in the fifth after Pola's blast to push another run across. Powell hit a line drive down the right field line that trickled to the wall for a stand-up triple. Three pitches later, Garcia brought Powell home on a single up the middle.

The No. 6 and 7 hitters, Powell and Garcia, were not done yet, picking up two more RBI singles in the sixth to put the mercy-rule into effect. After today's game, Powell boosts her batting average to .398.

Also notching multiple base hits in today's game were Jordan Woolery who went 3-for-3 and Rachel Cid who went 2-for-3 and scored UCLA's first run of the game in the second inning. Woolery joins Maya Brady as the only two Bruins on the team hitting above .400 this season with a .407 clip.

UCLA looks to extend its winning streak to 20 games in the Utah series finale tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. (PT). The contest will be televised on the Pac-12 Network with Krista Blunk on the call.
