No. 3 UCLA Advances to MPSF Semifinals

SAN JOSE, Calif.ย โ No. 3 UCLA (20-5, 4-2 MPSF) advanced to the semifinals of the 2023 MPSF Women's Water Polo Championship with a 16-6 win over No. 16 Arizona State (9-13, 1-5 MPSF) on Friday afternoonย at Spartan Recreationย Aquatics Center on the campus of San Jose State.
A total of 11 different Bruins got into the scoring column, paced by two goals each from graduate student Ava Johnson, senior Hannah Palmer, and freshmen Lily Gess, Anna Pearson, and Genoa Rossi.
Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and played the first half, registering eight saves whileย giving up two goals to the Sun Devils. Junior Sydney Chiang came on in relief in the second half and tallied six stops while surrendering four goals.
The Bruins scored the first four goals of the game, including three on their first three possessions, and were never threatened. UCLA led 5-1 at the end of the first period and pushed the lead to 7-2 at halftime. UCLA put another five goals on the board in the third period to lead 12-5 heading in the fourth. UCLA won the fourth quarter, 4-1, to provide the 16-6 final.
The Sun Devils were led by a hat trick from Tina Doherty. Itzahiana Baca got the startย in the cage and had one save while giving up seven goals. Alexa Knutson came on in the second half and had three saves but allowed nine scores.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow in the semifinals of the 2023 MPSF Championship when they take on No. 2 Stanford at at 12:45 p.m. PT at Spartan Recreation Aquatics Center on the campus of San Jose State.
