UCLA Drops Stanford Rubber Match, 10-7
April 30, 2023 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. โ The UCLA baseball team absorbed a 10-7 loss to No. 8 Stanford in Sunday's rubber match at Sunken Diamond.
The Bruins (24-15-1, 10-9-1) Pac-12) led for most of the game after putting together a four-inning scoring streak starting in the second, but the Cardinal (28-13, 15-6) chipped away at the lead before going ahead for good on an eighth-inning grand slam from Alberto Rios.
Sophomore shortstop Duce Gourson (2-5, double, two RBIs) and senior catcher Darius Perry (2-5, HR, two runs) were the Bruins' top offensive producers in the series finale, while freshman left fielder Jarrod Hocking chipped in three singles in five at-bats.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Chris Aldrich was UCLA's top performer on the mound, turning in 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief. The Oak Park, Calif. native got the Bruins out of a two-on jam in the sixth inning, entering the game and inducing an inning-ending double play ball on his very first pitch. He then worked around a pair of early singles to post a scoreless seventh.
The Bruins opened the game's scoring with a two-spot in the second, with runs coming across on RBI knocks from Hocking and Gourson.
After Stanford responded with a three-spot in the bottom half, Perry knotted the game back up for UCLA with a no-doubt solo home run to left field.
The Bruins kept up the offensive pressure in the middle innings, with Gourson leading a two-spot in the fourth with an RBI double that preceded a sac fly from junior third baseman Kyle Karros.
Then in the fifth, UCLA loaded the bases with one out after stringing together three consecutive singles, allowing runs to come across on a bases-loaded HBP and a sac fly from junior second baseman Daylen Reyes.
Rios went 3-3 with two runs scored and four RBIs to pace the Cardinal. He was one of five Stanford hitters with multiple hits. After starter Joey Dixon allowed seven runs over 4 1/3 innings, the bullpen duo of Drew Dowd and Ryan Bruno recorded 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief.
UCLA concludes a season-long eight game road swing on Tuesday, traveling to UC Irvine for a 6:00 p.m. matchup.
