Women's Rowing Opens With First-Place Showing in Sarasota

SARASOTA, Fla. โ€“ The UCLA women's rowing team finished in first place in each of its morning races at the Big Ten Invitational on Friday at Nathan Benderson Park.

The Bruins followed up in the afternoon session with a third-place finish in the varsity four event and three fourth-place finishes.
ย 
UCLA's two varsity eight and two varsity four crews raced in the two-day event's Friday morning session and finished first in four-boat heats.
ย 
The Bruins' top two varsity eight crews opened Friday's races with a pair of first-place finishes. The second varsity eight (2V8+) registered a final racing time of 6:47.788, crossing the finish line ahead of Central Florida (6:49.435), Minnesota (6:53.851) and Michigan State (6:47.387).

UCLA's varsity eight crew (V8+) was on the water nearly 10 minutes later and posted a final racing time of 6:39.418. The Bruins' boat finished ahead of Michigan State (6:44.672), Minnesota (6:45.298) and Central Florida (6:48.775).

The Bruins' top two varsity four crews raced nearly an hour later, with the second varsity four (2V4+) boat posting a first-place finish in 7:27.377. UCLA's boat was followed by Central Florida (7:31.175), Michigan State (7:34.357) and Minnesota (7:46.373).

The Bruins' varsity four crew (V4+) marked UCLA's final race in the morning session. UCLA's V4+ finished in first place with a time of 7:12.837, crossing the finish line ahead of Central Florida (7:16.727), Michigan State (7:20.439) and Minnesota (7:43.612).

UCLA's varsity four crew (V4+) finished in third place in its afternoon race, crossing the finish line ahead of Iowa by just over one second. Duke and Michigan finished in first and second place, respectively, in the V4+ race.

Both varsity eight boats and the Bruins' second varsity four finished in fourth place in the afternoon session, behind Iowa, Duke and Michigan in their respective races.

The Bruins will return to action on Saturday morning in four races โ€“ the two varsity eights and the two varsity fours. Saturday's races will be available for online viewing at the HereNow.com Facebook site (available here).
